Does anyone live near to St Mary's church, i have recently aquired burial records from Beds archives, of my gg/grandfaher.  In the write up about his funeral it says he was buried with his second wife, can anyone or would anyone mind having a look for me to see what her name was please.

The burial record is on page 34 and his number is 272 William Thomas Smith died 18. 08. 1904, he was a landlord of Morteyne Arms for around 7 years.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance

Ps was it normal for him to be burried with his second wife, when his 3rd wife followed hin to his place of burial?

What do you mean by " his 3rd wife followed him to his place of burial"?

was she buried in the same grave when she died after his death so that he was there with wives # 2 &#3?

Which parish? Marston Moretaine perhaps? There were (still are!) a number of St Marys in Beds

Death index of William Thomas Smith in Ampthill RD Jul/Sept 1904 vol 3b page 209, says he was aged 54.

His wife on 1901 census was Mary F Smith age 40 born Moulton Northants.

Was she the 2nd wife he's buried with ? ... as there's a death index of Mary Frances Smith in Ampthill RD Jan/Mar 1902 vol 3b page 241 at age 41 (note they had a son Francis in 1901)

Didn't the Archives notice her burial ?

Have you got (or are you going to get) the death certificates

And there's a William Thomas Smith married Kate Elizabeth Barber in the March Quarter 1903 at Ampthill RD. Probably the "third wife" who followed him.

Charlotte:- i believe it meant followed as in walked behind the prossession  Smiley
Bedfordshireboy:- Yes it is the Marston Moretaine parish, did i forget to mention that bit  Cheesy
                             Also the marriage of Willaim to Elizabeth makes sense, the newspaper article i have states that his 3rd wife and her mother and in brackets Mrs Barber, followed to the burial place
JohnP:- I also have this death index for William T Smith, didn't think to look for Marys.  I am going to order death cert for W.T.Smith. I now need to find out when Mary and W.T were married, but that should be quite easy.

They had quite a few sons in the 1901 census, and there are 3 more that i know of that aren't on it, i'm going to try and add a photo of one of my g grandfathers (William and Marys son) army records, i think Williams other sons are William Charles and Frederick, i know my g grandfather isn't on the 1901 census as he was in Africa, but not sure about the other two. Hope you're able to read it ok.

Ps why did you want me to note that they had Francis in 1901?

Only that the mother's middle name was Frances


If Mary was the 2nd wife - who was the first wife. Which one was the mother of your gt grandfather George John (born 1881 Dublin from your other topic). His army record show he had an older brother William - do you know when he was born.

I'm assuming Percy aged 2 born Marston in 1901 was from 2nd wife Mary. If you get his birth certificate, it will tell you her maiden name.. Free BMD has a Percy Smith born Jan-Mar 1899 in Ampthill RD vol 3b page 379

I thought that was what you were getting at once i'd sent the message, but i'm glad you clarified this.  I think i will get this certificate also, well eventually.  I don't know his older or younger brothers dates of birth...yet.

Hi John

I received the death certificates for Mary F Smith and William T Smith, i also got the birth certificate of Percy Smith, their son, born 1899, his mother's maiden name was Barber, as Bedfordshire boy posted that William T Smith married a Kate Elizabeth Barber, thanks Beds boy, this is all strting to fall into place, i just need to find who wife number one was.  As he married the sister of his second wife, maybe his first wife was also within the same family, maybe that would be too easy....i need to find out if Mary was my GGrandfathers mother or whether Williams first wife was.

On 1881 census Mary F Barber is age 19 born Molton, Northants, a domestic servant to a family headed by Baptist Minister named Robert Wallace living in Melbourne Derbyshire

RG11/3386 Folio 22, Page 7

While 10 year old Kate E was still living with parents at Little Bowden Northants

Hello Posty,

I've just got my hands on a survey done by the Beds FHS around 1996 which created an index of the MI's in St Mary's Marston Moreteyne churchyard.

There is a grave with 2 Smiths in it that could be yours, but there are a few factors that don't correlate with the data we've found out already. However I'll detail it below & you can use it or dismiss it as you like.

Grave E4 Headstone

Smith Mary Frances  died   2 Jan 1902 age 42  - burial 6 Jan 1902 age 41 in register 
Smith Thomas          died 15 Aug 1904  age 55 - burial 17 Aug 1904 name Thomas Kingsmill Smith

And the plot thickens...our Mary Frances did die in 1902, but her husband was William Thomas, he died 1904 (I'M recalling this from memory, so hope i'm right).

I might be having a thick moment, but what is MI?
