I am trying to find the death of my ancestor James Mudie. He was born in 1821 in Inverkeillor but lived in Arbroath for most of his life. He was a canvas powerloom weaver. I found him in 1871 in Arbroath, with his wife, Mary(1819) and children. In 1881 Mary is living as a widow with some of her children.
A search in SR deaths shows some James Mudies in Angus in 1871-1881 but none in Arbroath.
Can someone help find him for me so that I can purchase his certificate?
Are there other records he might appear in?
Thank you.
Chris.

Hi Ev, It has been some time since I transcribed the 1881 census entry but what I had was that Mary was living with her daughter (Agnes) and son-in-law (James Smith) at Underwood Street, Arbroath. Also in the home was David Mudie, her son. No longer have access to census so cannot confirm it now sorry. Chris.

Wow. Thanks so much. I didn't know that. I think a relative had transcribed this 1881 entry and I just assumed it was Arbroath. A quick look at Renfrew deaths shows no James' who could be him. But perhaps I'm adding too many details. I wonder if there are any burial records avail. for Paisley. He is definitely still alive in 1871 in Arbroath with Mary, Margaret, Charles, Agnes & David. Chris.

Hi ev, can you recall if Mary was a widow in 1881 census? If not, maybe she was just visiting her daughter but husband James was still at home in Arbroath. In which case he may have died after 1881. Just a thought. Chris.

Hi ev,
I've stumbled on some new information. Found this on SP wills index:
Mudie Mary 06/03/1890 or Ramsay, sometime residing at 97 Thistle Street, Garnethill, Glasgow, afterwards in Blantyre Street, Glasgow, thereafter in Fergus Street, Arbroath, wife of James Mudie, presently abroad, d. 19/02/1890 at Arbroath, testate Forfar Sheriff Court SC47/40/57.
I purchased a copy of the will and twice it claims that James is abroad, though it doesn't say where. The will was written in 1887. James in not a beneficiary, only the children are.
I then found this in 1881 England which could be him but not sure:
Dwelling 8 Hannington Street Census Place Byker, Northumberland, England
Elizabeth FOSTER Head W Female 51 Seghill, Northumberland, England Shopkeeper (Gant) Joshua J. FOSTER Son U Male 21 Newcastle On Tyne Labourer Elizabeth FOSTER Daur U Female 19 Newcastle On Tyne Wire Worker William FOSTER Son Male 15 Newcastle On Tyne Sail Maker Jane FOSTER Daur Female 12 Newcastle On Tyne Scholar Mary FOSTER Daur Female 7 Newcastle On Tyne Scholar James MUDIE Boarder M Male 59 Scotland Canvas Weaver Francis O. FARREL Boarder U Male 30 Scotland Labourer
The occupation is certainly correct but a lot of the Mudies were weavers. To a Scot was England classified as 'abroad'?
Are you able to help with this in any way? Can this James Mudie be found in earlier census' to rule him out?
Any suggestions as to where I go from here?
Chris.

Hi Chris
I have just come across your email about James Mudie who is my great, great, great grandfather! My research shows that he died on 28th November 1898 in the Poor House, Arbroath. I do not have a copy of his death certificate although I do have further information from the document which will help you develop the family tree another 2 generations.
I look forward to hearing from you
Ian

Whilest researching a George Mudie,of Peterhead, I was made aware of a book entitled "Mudies of Angus". If you have n't already read it, I can thoroughly recommend it! (I was able to borrow a copy from the library.) Regards, flst

Hi Ian, Thank you for your reply. It is good to make contact with fellow descendants. I have been researching the Mudies for about 8 years now but have only recently purchased all the certificates available of the ancestors. I would be very interested to see what ancestors you have found for James. Hopefully we came to the same conclusions. Where did you find James' death record? He doesn't appear in SP as 'Mudie', is it under a surname variant? Please feel free to send me a PM or email me directly. I am happy to share with you any/all the information I have. Chris.

Hi ev, Thank you for the link to the site. It looks like it could be a very useful site for future research. I think the James Mudie you found on the site though was only 67 years old (I need one closer to 77 for an 1898 death). I didn't purchase credits to look at the burial record but a free search at SP shows that the James Mudie who died in 1898 in Arbroath was only 67. Hoping that Ian will contact me soon and share the records he has. Chris.

Dear All,
I have received a reply from Ian and he has confirmed that James Mudie who died in Arbroath in 1898 is correct. Despite the age discrepancy, all the other details on the death certificate are correct.
Thank you everyone for your help. It is good to finally know what happened to James.
Chris.
