Hi
Does anybody know if there is an electoral roll for the year 1924, and the two years before for Northbourne Street?

Sorry Michael
I was in a hurry when I posted it this morning. The Northbourne Street in Newcastle, probably near Elswick Road. Is that any help?

Rosemary,
It joins Elswick Road to Westmorland Rd/St John's Road.
I have Electoral Register info for 1924 and before, for other streets in Newcastle. So I would guess they exist for Northbourne Rd. ERs accessible in Newcastle City Library.
Have you asked the most appropriate question ? Should you not be asking " Could someone please find out from Electoral Registers who lived at ?? Northbourne St, Elswick ? " or something similar ? lol.

Hi Michael
I could have asked the obvious, but I know our record office doesn't have every year, so I was just checking first
I am looking for number 59 Northbourne St, if anybody can help.
Thanks
Rosemary

Rosemary,
After the closing and demolition of the Central Library in Newcastle a couple of years ago, the Local and Family section was temp rehoused in Civiv Centre until April this year. Then closed to allow books etc to get readied in the nearly built City Library. It had grand opening last Sunday. I am venturing out today to see if I can find my way around it.
So I shall have a go at 1924 and before, for 59 Northbourne St ( Should I be aware of the family name, just in case street numbering has been amended, as sometimes happens ? )

Hi Michael
I don't know if you've already left, but the name is Ford/e.
It was my grandparents and uncle, who are all now deceased.
Thank you for your help Michael

Thank you Michael.
That's just confirmed for me when my grandparents left Glasgow for Newcastle. My uncle was born in 1919, and thought he moved here when he was 5 years old. In fact he was 2 and a half.
I'm confused about the different symbols, O R and H.
I take it that he was working, so he got the O, but how did he get the R and the O?
That does leave a gap between Autumn 1923 and 1928 now. My mam was born when they lived there, I wonder where they went in between.
It's brilliant how you can find out their every move just about, it's like they've left an invisible trail. I hope it's not as easy for people to follow my trail in years to come. I think they would probably struggle, the amount of times I moved home

Rosemary,
O was qualifying by employment
R was qualifying by living in accommodation that had a certain value
H was for a woman qualifying through her husband's qualification
R O was qualifying by both Residence and Occupation.
There were other conditions e.g. Army, Navy personnel absent abroad.

( Now that I know where Northburne St lies within the set-up [ the ERs of that era were in Ward area, then in Street order, alphabetically, the street number order..... ] I will have a look up to and beyond 1928, next time at Library)

I know they were still living at 11 Strickland Street in 1934. My mam thinks they lived on Westmoreland Road at some time, before moving to Isabella Street, where they were in 1944 when my grandfather died.
Thank you for making the qualifying initials clearer.

Rosemary,
Are you seriously interested in voting qualifications of the era ?
I confess I only threw at you abbreviated qualifications- it was a bit more complicated that that... i.e. different qualifications between Local and Parliamentary registrations, and in an era when qualifications were undergoing changes ( Some of the Registers I perused were for L and P separately, some were L and P combined)
59 Northbourne St Autumn 1927 Annie Coman and John McCloud
1933/34 Annie alone
11 Strickland St 1933/34 George Hope Parlia Q=R. Local Q = O Thomas Ford " " " "
1938/39 George Hope ( alone)
1938/39 No Ford in Isabella St. No Fords in Strickland St

Thanks Michael for your continued interest.
Are your Dixons in Carlisle related to the ones who Dixons chimney is named after?

Rosemary,
My Brampton-born g/f Samuel Dixon married a Brampton-born Elizabeth McGlade, then they had children , including my father, in Haltwhistle, in drift coal mines ( Sam worked in them, Eliz did not have her children in them) Then moved to deep mines in South-east Northumberland ( Bedlington/Bebside)
For some reason the family packed up and settled in Carlisle in early 1950s ( London Rd, then new estate in Harraby) leaving my father who by then had married my Gallagher mother.
As far as I know no chimneys in my tree. As a child sometimes staying with g/parents, i rembember having difficulty sleeping because of the welding flashes/sparks from an engineering works at the back ( ? Cowans ? )

I don't really know Harraby area. It's not really that far from the chimney, but it doesn't sound like there's a connection.
My husband's family settled at the other side of Carlisle at Tarraby, which I didn't know existed until a couple of years ago.
