Clayton Family of Tupton
« on: Friday 12 June 09 09:01 UTC (UK) »

i am hoping that there is someone out there can help with information about the Clayton family of Tupton Derbyshire
My information is extremely sketchy.
As this is my first day of research, and i need to cut my teeth on this pretty quick. Mum is pretty poorly and she can't give me much information.
Cry

I am looking for her father Frederick Ernest Clayton
He was born in the first quarter of 1903 in Tupton and sadly died at the age of 29, of some form of industrial chemical poisoning, when mum was only 2 c.1933
He married a lady by the name of Millicent May Wood (nothing is know about Her either - sorry)

All i know is he came from a big family
Names mentioned are Alice, Wilfred, Joseph, Lucy, Harry, Annie, poss Mary or meg  Huh  and also a Maria Elizabeth aka. ''Lizzie''
i believe Lizzie married a Frederick Elliot.

i am hoping someone can help me with this so i can do it for her before it is too late. i have got to apply for mum's birth certificate (she's only got the "Penny one" and has managed to lose her marriage certificate too! - otherwise i would go for grand fathers birth certificate first!
i have spent so much time on my other family trees that i have left this one a little late!

Heres hoping
Kindest Regards & Many thanks
Betton

Hi Betton

1911 census is a good place to try, this gives parents, length of marriage, number of children born and surviving
www.1911census.co.uk

Marriage reg:
Jun 1886   Chesterfield  7b   1047
CLAYTON    Frederick     and on same page  HALLOWES  Maud Mary

A search of the free 1911 index shows a Frederick Ernest aged 8 with parents Frederick and Maud Mary so I think that would be worth spending a few credits on

Kind regards

1901 Census Maud and Frederick are in Tupton, with children who have names off your list;

RG13/3245/75/11

Can post details if you need them.

Death registration

Mar 1934 Chesterfield    7b   865
Clayton    Frederick E   aged  31

There are 3 possible Millicent Woods born in Derbyshire on the 1911 census index aged 6, 7 and 5, born Belper, Ashbourne and Chesterfield, you might need the marriage cert to determine which is the right one

Jumping ahead, Frederick, born Rainham,Notts according to 1901, is with his parents on 1881 Census. Obviously they moved to Tupton  at some stage.

You can find this on Familysearch;
Father Joseph CLAYTON, born 1838,Mansfield, Notts

Possible marriage;

Joseph CLAYTON
Harriet LUCAS
September 1861
Mansfield
7b 68
This would have to be confirmed from birth/marriage cert. of Frederick born 1838 of course but looks likely.

You are SO lucky with this family as they are easy to find Wink

1861 Joseph Clayton is a lodger with the LUCAS family. Harriet is not at home though. LOVE his occp. laborer-game killer.

1861 Census
26 Rainworth St
Blidworth,Notts                         RG9/2430/21/5

William LUCAS,head,mar,67,ag lab,Willow,Notts
Milicent,wife,mar,57,Blidworth
Thomas,son,unm,26,ag lab, Blidworth
Ellen,daug,unm,15,Blidworth
JOSEPH CLAYTON,boarder,unm,23, laborer-game killer, Mansfield,Notts

Possible brother of Harriet living nearby with Family.

Pity Millicent M isn't so easy.  Undecided  Smiley

I think you will have to get her marriage cert to find out her father's name and occupation, to decide which one she is on the 1911 census and then work backwards from there.

OK Betton Smiley I am on right track.

Someone else is researching this Clayton line and has the family WELL researched back another 2/3 generations.

Do you have access to Ancestry?

I have to go off-line soon. Will be back on later tonight.

It would be lovely for you to have contact with other Claytons esp if your Mother is unwell.

Cheers,

i have managed to get a little on the Hallowes connection. i have found Maud M with parents Thomas and Mary Hallowes, Living in Tupton. But lose her parents as a couple in 1871

I know grandma died in 1971 (Millicent May Wood) - will ask mum if she knew her grandparents names. The body may be weak but the greatest tool of all is still very sharp!  Smiley

Thank you both so much - words can not explain how chuffed i am.
At the mo i am also tryong to work on going foreward - so that i can find the living ones as well, so the contact from ancestry will be great.
