Looking for information on Michael Loftus. He was born Ireland in 1851. His wife was Mary Loftus born Ireland 1849. Possibly that's her married name. They were staying in West Calder, Scotland in 1881. They had family from a previous marriage.
In 1881, their family consisted of Mary Rohan, stepdaughter born 1869 West Calder, Cornelius Rohan, stepson born 1871 West Calder, Maggie Rohan, stepdaughter born 1874 West Calder, Ellen Loftus daughter born 1877 West Calder and John Loftus son born 1879 West Calder. Michael was employed as a surfaceman in 1881. And a railway platelayer by 1891.
By 1891, they had Michael Loftus born 1883 West Calder and Thomas Loftus born 1886 West Calder.
Mary Rohan married Ambrose Purvis in West Calder in 1897. Ambrose's parent's were Richard Purvis born 1837 Ireland and Mary Purvis born Ireland 1838. Again Purvis being her married name. Her maiden name is Mary Meighan or Muchan? They were married in Bridgeton, Glasgow in 1870. Richard and Mary were living in Livingston, West Lothian in 1891. Richard and Mary had a daughter called Letitia Purvis born 1872 in Glasgow. Letitia was staying at Livingston in 1881. By 1901, Letitia was staying in Beith, Ayrshire as a housekeeper to James Connor born 1871 Dalry, Ayrshire.
I know it seems a bit complicated, but if anyone can help me as they link into my Davies of Addiewell, West Calder family tree.

Thanks EV for that info. There is a strong connection to the West Calder area. But I'm not too sure on some of the streets as to them being still around. I have something that looks like Dec Street in West Calder.
I'm also puzzled by Cornelius Rohan or Rowan as you have discovered he was named. Born 1871 West Calder. He was the stepson living with Michael Loftus and Mary Ryans in 1881. When he was born, his parents were Hugh Ruane and Mary Ryan. So I'm trying to see if perhaps Mary Ryan and Ryans are the same person and maybe Hugh has died. All linked to my Fred Davies who had the fruit and confectionery business in Broxburn.

Hello,
Your Rohan (Rowan) family in the 1881 census were in Simpson Street, which was in Addiewell, part of the oil works houses built for Young's Paraffin Oil Works. The Streets were named for Explorers/Scientists, eg Graham, Farraday, Bell, Livingston, Simpson etc. The Dec Street you have for West Calder is probably Dee Street, part of the "Happy Land"in West Calder, again miners houses, all named for Scottish Rivers, Forth, Clyde, Tay, Dee etc. None of these streets survive, the Addiwell houses were demolished in the 60's, the Happy Land houses were demolished in the 30's with prefabs put in their place, which in turn were demolished.
