A further complication.  I came across another Ruth Read - damn!  Married George Chesterfield in 1832 at Deeping.  Heaven knows who she is.

1851 says aged 41 from D St J

The marriage witnesses were James and Ruth FRISBY (from FreeREG)

She lived with husband George at Eastgate, Deeping St James until he died 1881. Censuses 1851 to 1891 consistently show her as born 1810 Deeping St James (except 1871 born 1808). Probable death record 4Q 1892 age 82.

Thanks chaps - I think this Ruth Read is nothing to do with me.  Was just discombobulated by having a second one turn up. Only have a birth for one of course.

There is another element to the Ruth Read saga. Sorry - hold on to your hats. In 1861 a Louisa Wormald is staying with William and Ruth and described as neice and born Surfleet.  This is (of course) Louisa Reed, father John and mother Frances Sharpe.  The complication here is that "my" Ruth (married Michael Lenton then married William Sheppard) - does not appear to have a brother called John.  There is one of Stephen's children called John but he seems to have married Mary Gibbons. It's possible I suppose there is another Read family in the area that we have not unearthed yet.  This would explain both our second Ruth Read and the second John Read.

Phew !!

Meantime I am just ordering the Ann Sheppard death certificate in Buckingham (Ivan's find) and the William Sheppard/Ruth Glenton marriage certificate.

Thanks as ever guys - Sue

Sue

Shouldn't this be 1851? And isn't Louisa described as "Wife" rather than "Niece"?

Hi Ivan ..  Yes sorry. Advanced age and decrepitude have obviously set in.  You are quite right on both counts.  However - at some point I did the research and Louisa "Whamold" is in fact Louisa Read that was.

So you've joined us at the AA&D Club, Sue. Welcome!

I agree that we still need a reason for Louisa (nee Read) and Wm Wormald to be lodging with Wm and Ruth.

I gave the death record for Rose Sheppard because I supposed that Ruth and Rose could be the same person. Ages and places of birth tally. almost tally.

Bye for now.

Yes, it's in the IGI (1850), Louisa (dau of John) to William (son of Richard).

John REED was buried at Surfleet in 1841 age 33.  I suppose he could have been bap 1806 at D St J, son of Stephen and Mary

I think the John who married Mary GIBBONS was much younger (34 in 1851 of Market Deeping) - apparently his mother was Elizabeth ... yes, he is in IGI.

Hi chaps ...  Have I thanked you for your help? I really do appreciate it !

I've now got the marriage certificate for William Shepherd (sic) and Ruth Glenton. At least one surprise. And although Ruth's name is down as Glenton, she has signed as Ruth G. Lenton.  So we were right about that.  Here's the guts of it :

Parish of Holy Trinity, County of Hull
1844, April 7
William Shepherd, "of full age", Bachelor, Brick Maker, Lamb's Court, John Shepherd Labourer
Ruth Glenton, "of full age", Widow, -, the same place, The Late George Read, Labourer.
Signed William Shepherd his mark, Ruth G Lenton
Witnessed - Richard Sherwood, Jane Richardson.

So William was a bachelor was he ??  Wink   Interesting also that William is down as a brick maker.  His nephew James also was a brick maker at one time - in Potterspury, Northants.

I've sent for the Buckingham Ann Shepherd death. Struggling with conclusions till we have that !!

Cheers - Sue

Hello again Sue

Thanks for the update and Yes, you did indeed thank us for our efforts. It's just a shame we can't make immediate progress with William's possible first marriage (to Ann).

Please let is know what the death certificate says - although as I said it is a "long shot".

Best Wishes

Hi Ivan .. just a quickie as I'm in a rush.  Just to say that the death cert was for a baby ... So not ours !!  Anyway it ruled that one out = was worth investigating.

More later.
