Weymouth Workhouse
« on: Friday 12 June 09 13:58 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

One of my relatives is shown in the Weymouth Workhouse in 1861 - Albert Mitchell, also with him are three siblings John (11) Emma (Cool and Alice (6).

I know that Albert went on to marry a Tabitha Groves but what I would like to know is how did you "get out" of the workhouse once in it.

Another thing is there anyway I can find out what happened to the siblings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a very useful site about workhouses:

The 1871 entry you refer to gives Albert's birthplace as Taunton, and his siblings' as Melcombe Regis, but the 1861 entry gives Weymouth for the latter.

The following may be Emma:

1871   Emma Mitchell, 18, b Weymouth, servant in Bishop Hull (RG10/2375)

1881  Emma Mitchell, 27, b Weymouth, housekeeper in Churchstanton, Devon (RG11/2364)
Living with her is James Mitchell, 13, b Taunton

1871 James R Mitchell, 3, b Taunton, boarding with the Redwoods in Churchstanton (RG10/2367)

Emma appears to have returned to Taunton, where her family was once based, and had an illegitimate child in 1867. He was christened James Richards Mitchell which may give a clue as to the father's name.

All of this is far from proved.
