Church Farm Cottages, Baulking, Berkshire
« on: Friday 12 June 09 15:12 BST (UK) »

Hi,
I wondered if anyone knows anything about  Church Farm Cottages in Baulking, near Uffington, Berkshire please? This is the last known home of my Great Uncle and Aunt, Ozhare and Violet Johnson (formerly Bailey) in 1965, when Ozhare died. He was a farm worker, so I wondered if they might have been tythe cottages?
Any help would be great, many thanks.

I think you are getting a little confused with your nomenclature - tied cottages were/are homes owned by the farmer and let to farm workers, which the worker would lose if he lost his job. Church Farm cottages could well have been part of Church Farm.

Tithes were a form of taxation payable in kind or later as cash to the vicar/rector - tithe barns were commonplace, somewhere for the clergyman to keep the farm produce paid to him. I have never come across a tithe cottage.
