Hello Jen.
There might have been a picture of him taken while he was in the Met. Though I don't have any I'm afraid. Glad the rest was useful though.

I have a Met. Police officer who resigned from the force 1933, his rank is given as SPS which I think is Security Protective Service. Who or what would he be protecting?
Thanks
Carol

Hello Carol (Mentmore).
I think that the rank SPS stands for Station Police Sergeant - taken from the Police Orders website's Key/Glossary page. I'm not sure what the role involved though. You might have to do a bit of searching on the matter.
Yours, BarnabyP

Hello Marian.
I don't have any photographs of leaving information that recent. The Registers of Leavers only go up to 1947, unfortunately. However working on him being in the Force for 25 years, I have managed to find when he joined on the Attestation Ledgers - MEPO 4/358/151; he's near the bottom on the left page. If you wanted to find out when he resigned you would probably have to search through the Police Orders, contained in TNA's 'MEPO 7' series. You may also be able to find a pension for this officer in TNAs series 'MEPO 21'
Yours BarnabyP

Hello. I have done a check against the Registers of Leavers and have found a 'Ralph George Woolley' MEPO 4/348 Page 54. He joined in 1919 and left in 1928 and seems to have spent his whole career in the same division; P.
They're also on the Attestation Ledger.
Does that look right to you?

Hello Tony.
Do you know if the officer served before and after the war? If he served during the war only then it's possible that he was in the Police War Reserve. I don't know if there are any records in existence for this. I have done a search on The National Archives website and there are some interesting results - but I don't know if/how many are of any use. I think that I also have a recollection that some people were mentioned in Police Orders for that period - I know that officers who transferred to the force proper were mentioned in them.
It might be worth getting in touch with the Metropolitan Police Historical Collection team - historicstore @ met.police.uk
Hope that's of some use, BarnabyP

Hi Barnaby, congratulations on all the work you have done, and for your help to researchers. I was directed to your site by another rootschat member. I am interested in a James Bowen who enlisted with the Met on 25/9/1848 and was dismissed on 12/7/1852. His descendant found out this much at Kew from MEPO4/334, but wants to know if he can find out why he was dismissed. Do you have access to these earlier records? thanks.

Hello Beatrice834.
Thank you.
I'm not sure that records that detail this information are available for this period. You might try the police orders in MEPO 7. But the detail about police officers tends to start a little later than 1852. It's worth having a check if you're there. I'm just not sure that records exist.
Otherwise you can always give the team at MPS Historical Collection a go at the email address in my last post. They could have something.
Yours, BarnabyP
