this house is/was on Birchfields Road Manchester. I found it on 1911 census but have no idea where it is on that long road. It was lived in by William Alfred Pearn.

Hello Megan Welcome to rootschat . I was wondering whether you could search www.historicaldirectories.org and in particular the street directory of Slaters , Manchester 1911 . This I would have thought have listed William and then you could have had a good idea of the nearest road . Have a look at the particular directory but I could'nt find a PEARN on that road . Do you have a number ? Whilst I was messing about I had a look at the Slaters 1909 ,Manchester alphabetical and I noticed that there was a William A. PEARN , engineer for a firm called Frank PEARN , he was listed at 5 Newton Terrace . Newton Avenue , Longsight . There were some other PEARNS listed namely Harry , Sinclair and Frank. It seems an unusual surname so I thought I would mention it just in case Please ignore my ramblings if not connected . Regards Eric

Welcome to Rootschat Megan
If you go on the Old Maps site, you can see that Birchfields Rd was still quite open with few houses on, even in the 1920s. On the 1923 map most of the houses seem to be around Birch Hall Lane, opposite Birch Park. there are even fewer on the 1909 version, so your house might have been around there and quite new in 1911.
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx enter co-ordinates 386100 and 386100 or just search on Birchfields Road Manchester.
Lovely photo. Hope this helps
Barbara

thank you for both replies - the family lived at Newton Ave before moving to Birchfields Road. It is the house number that so far eludes me!I am waiting for 1911 census enumerators reports, and can then maybe find the houses on either side. I've looked on birds eye etc, and counted houses with similar bay windows, but no luck yet.

Hi Megan If you turn this round - maybe you ve already done this?- and do an address search in the 1911 on Birchfields Rd, you get only three properties:
The Lodge, Birchfields Park (the 'parkie's' house, I guess) Rusholme 'Kelsie', Birchfields Rd, Rusholme 'Birchfeild' (1911 spelling!), Rusholme
This corresponds with the 1909 map that shows very few, if any, properties built along that road at the time. Also that Birchfields Rd was a lot shorter then and did not extend beyond Birch Hall Lane. So I don't think the enumerators report will be that helpful, as it would appear there were so few houses, numbers were not necessary. The Lodge is on the park side of the road obviously, the other houses will all be on the opposite side. I'm fairly sure of this, I went to the girls High School and walked down Birchfields Rd many times in my youth (but being a youth of course, had no eye for the details of housing ) What is the time frame for the Pearns moving from Newton to Birchfields?

that is so helpful, I did not enter the address or thought about the road being so different. The Pearns were in Newton in 1901 and in Kelsie by 1911. I did click on neighbours on the 1911, but that got me more confused as neither house was actually on Birchfiields Road. on one side was Edwin Sprowton, his address is 81 Slade Grove, Longsight, and the other side was Charles Robertshaw 198 Stockport Road Longsight. I attach the only other pic I have, shows just a tiny bit more of the window. Thank you so much for your help. Megan

I have just put in Birchfield Road (left off the s) and there are quite a few houses listed between 43 - 65 and numbers 2,3 and 4. I wonder if any of these could be nieghbouring properties?

Hi Megan,
Found the house on ancestry's directory collection in the Kelly's 1929 Manchester & Salford:
65, Parr, Henri Ambler "here is Birch Hall Lane" 67, Matthews, Harry Dearman 69, Pearn, Mrs Agnes (Kelsie) 71, Arnold, Sam, accountant
So the house should be next door but one to the corner of Birch Hall Lane, opposite the park.
Barbara
They will have renumbered the houses since 1911 I expect due to new build

wow, I am so impressed.
I have looked before at number 6 on Birchfield Road on google street view and wondered if that house with round bay windows was 'my' house, and now it looks like it may well be.
I subsribe to Ancestry how do I get to the Kelly's directories?
thank you so much for your help.
Megan

There is a new category called UK, City and County Directories 1600-1900. If you go onto that you get the name search menu. The search isn't very good, or do I mean its to good? as you get loads of hits that you have to plough through. At first I didn't find it but then I tried the house name Kelsie in the 'keyword' box and there it was.
I like looking through the directories, but as I say it does seem to be very slow. Maybe its just my old computer
