Calling All Bristolians
« on: Friday 12 June 09 17:22 UTC (UK) »

Archivist for a bit of help as I'm due to visit Bristol next week-end!

I'm trying to find my Great x2 Grandfather's burial place with absolutely no luck what so ever. His name was George Clifford Hopkins of 3 Allens Ct Hotwell Rd Bristol. He died age 44 on 27/09/1910 in the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Ive tried Newspaper Archives, Bristol's Archivist, Arnos Vale cemetery Canford cemetery I'm told they hold the records for Bristol's 8 municipal Cemeteries but nothing. Im told his local Churchyard in Clifton had no graveyard so he wasnt buried there and I don't know anything about his religionb]HELP[/b]

Hi.

I've only a few tentative suggestions, maybe other readers can help with answers.

My first thought is, given the age of the BRI - it might have it's own archivist.  Might be worth asking Bristol Records Office, or even Bristol University.

I take it you have looked for obits in the local paper.  Although rather unusual, is there any chance he might have left his body to science?  (no offence meant, but it might explain why there was no burial record)

More likely George Clifford Hopkins is clearly a Welsh name - any chance he's buried there?  If he was baptised into a Chapel, he'd have certainly gone back for burial.

You could try emailing Bristol & Avon family history society, perhaps they might have an idea.

Joe,

Have you asked the Bristol records office if they hold the admission records of the hospital?  My wife found some metropolitan hospital records via Ancestry recently which gave remarkable information (admittedly not burial) but perhaps the Bristol RO might have something helpful.

Regards

Chas.

Did he always live in Bristol?  Did he have children who lived elsewhere?  Where did his parents die?  Wondering if he was buried in a family grave elsewhere.  Did he have children in Bristol because if you could find a baptism for one of them it might show his religion?

There aren't that many cemeteries in Bristol.  I don't know when Bedminster crematorium started and don't know who keeps the records.

Can't think of anything else.

Ok where to start,he was Welsh but moved in his infancy to Bristol. All the Children were born, married and died in Bristol expect one who died in Plymouth & was buried with his Wifes Roman Catholic family. I don't think this is particularly of great important as they rest of the family were C of E.

George's wife's family were all born, bred and married in Bristol. The daughters are all in Arnos Vale cemetrey buried with their new families?

I've spoken to a relative who lived in Hotwells and she said that there were lots of chapels in the area.  Also there was Trinity Church, St Peters, Jacobs Wells and St Andrew the Less.  One of her relatives was buried in Westbury Church in the 1920s.  Thats not far away.   My relative said that if he happened to be buried in a pauper's grave it may not be recorded.

Did the Bristol Archivist actually look through the parish records?  If not it seems thats the only way to find the burial.

Sorry I can't help any  more.  I haven't looked for any burials yet.
