Minnie Newby b Barrow in Furness
« on: Friday 12 June 09 18:26 UTC (UK) »

I am at a brick wall and wonder if anyone can help.

Minnie Newby born 1888 Barrow on passenger list to USA in 1913 travelling with a Kate Mann and her 3 children. Contact for both Ernest Mann, Kate's husband with an address in NY.

A Minnie Newby appears in Texas directory for 1917. Thats all I have and I know it's not much. Can anyone help with any little bit of info.

There's a Minnie Newby in the 1920 & 1930 Census who was born in Texas and married, so, unless you have other information about your Minnie being in Texas, I suspect the one in that directory might not be yours.

The New York City brides index on italiangen.org has a Minnie Newby who married an Alfred Goldie on 28 Aug. 1915 in Kings Co./Brooklyn.

There are some passenger list entries from Liverpool to NY in the 1920's with Minnie Goldie, who was born in Barrow-in-Furness and going to visit mother Mrs. Jones in Manchester.  Does that fit?  The Social Security Death Index has a Minnie Goldie born 31 Jul. 1888 & died Feb. 1964.  Her SS# was issued in New York before 1951, and her last residence was Florida.

If she's the right one, I found Minnie Goldie, husband "Fred", and daughter Irine living in Brooklyn in the 1920 Census.  It says she immigrated in 1914, which is a pretty close match for your Minnie.

Thank you so much for your help. I will discount the Texas Minnie for now and concentrate on checking what you have given me. As far as I know her mother was Newby but you never know.

I will let you know how I go.

If you have her exact date of birth, we can try looking for her on the social security index (providing she worked in America and that she was still alive as late as the 1950's).

Someone on *Anc..* has Alfred Goldie marrying "Minnie Unknown".  This Minnie was born in England.  They have quite a bit of information about Alfred's side, but nothing about Minnie.

There's a Minnie Newby born in Barrow in Furness in a quarter of 1888 that would fit the SSDI entry I found above.  If that's the correct birth, it seems even more likely that Minnie Goldie is the right one.

Hi Shelly:
I noticed the Sept 1888 birth, but I wasn't sure how births are entered in England (most of my English ancestors were born prior to 1837).  If I remember correctly, Alfred had an American WWII card as well.

Thank you so much everyone. The Barrow birth is the right one and I had found the entry in SSDI you mentioned but without proof have not decided if it was the correct one.

I only subscribe to UK ancestry so will look at what you have suggested when I can from work where I can look at USA one.

If this Alfred Goldie has WW2 details on Ancestry maybe they will give her maiden name.

It doesn't, but I feel it's pretty likely that this Alfred Goldie married a Minnie Newby.  The question is whether it's your Minnie Newby.  You could try ordering the marriage certificate if you were so inclined.  I have one NYC marriage certificate from the early 1900's and it only had country of birth (not the town), but it did have parents' names.  The information on ordering certificates is here:  http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/home.shtml

WWII Draft Registration Card
Alfred Goldie
168 86th St., Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York
Age 53, born 8 Sep. 1888 in Dundee, Scotland
Person who will always know his adddress - Minnie Goldie
Employer - Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, 1 Madison Ave., New York, New York
White, 5' 7 1/2 " tall, 150 lbs., blue eyes, grey hair, ruddy complexion

Thanks for your help. Could I ask is it possible to ask for the marriage cert only if fathers name was correct.

In England we can do this so we don't end up paying for one thats no use but have never got one from USA.

No, unfortunately I haven't found anywhere in the US that does that.  I wish they did!

Just to say thank you for all the help.

The Minnie Goldie was the correct one. The address she gave was where her family lived so there is no doubt about it.

Thanks to you I have found her mother remarried in 1912.

Thanks once again.
