Uniform - Possible 33rd Division 1916??
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 14:56 UTC (UK) »

Hi all

I have recently found the attached photograph.

I'm wondering if the chap on the left is my Great Grandad James Jackson who was born about 1893 and died in 1978.

I have been told that he was in the Army and that he was shot and returned home.

I have also found a card with the photograph which is a Christmas/New Year post card from 1916 33rd Division. I have found a bit about the 33rd Division on the website 1914-1918 but i am unsure if this photo goes with the card.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Jemma

Hi Jemma

Both men are Lance Corporals and are also wearing one Good Conduct 'badge' - the inverted stripe above the left cuff. This should mean that they were Regulars, so their papers may still be with the MOD if they served after 1920.

The one seated is wearing two overseas chevrons, for one year's service each. They were introduced in 1918.

A high res scan of his right shoulder might help in identifying his regiment. They are not wearing medal ribbons so the photograph was taken no later than early 1921.

Update... neither man is wearing a wound badge. These were also introduced in 1918. So my guess is that neither of these men had been wounded.

Hi Ken

Thanks for this info.

I have managed to dig out another photo and it looks like its the guy on the right thats my great grandad. Ive tried to re scan the photo in high res to get a better look at his shoulder but its not any good, still as blurry.

As its before 1921 im guessing that the attached card from the 33rd Division belongs to him also.

Having spoken to other family member they seem to remember him having a scar on his arm from a wound but that he received it later than 1921.

I wish he was still around to ask, i have so many questions!!

Thanks again
