Any ideas of date / Regiment (2) ?
« on: Friday 12 June 09 20:38 UTC (UK) »

Anyone have any ideas of regiment & date?

I posted this a while back but the scan wasnt very good so I have re-scanned it.

Not sure how clear it is but it has "158" next to the stick.

At first glance it looks like the cap badge of The Prince of Wale's Volunteers, The South Lancashire Regiment but a better high res' image of just the badge may say one way or the other.

It also has  what looks like A. S. Wilson (and another line of writing that I can not work out) in the bottom right hand corner of the image, photographer perhaps?

The badge is South Lancs (PWV) Regt.

WW1 vintage, no toe caps on his boots?

Cant read the bottom line of writing, its looks like 'Border Regt.' but that makes no sense.

This isnt the same guy from your other photo ?

The other photo looks like Boer War period, this one is later - but the South Lancs were based in Warrington, so this photo is a local regiment to either photo.

Hi Pete,

I honestly dont know if its the same person, South Lancs WOULD tie in - the Family were based around Latchford in Warrington for generations.

I am just in the process of re-installing my PSP so I can try & zoom in on some of the details.

Cap Badge & close up of Corner.

I have tried to sharpen the writing but it just emphasises the scratches instead!

I'd go with the South Lancs Rgt as well.

Looks like the photo was taken in the late 20's early 30's and he's parading his old uniform for the camera. I'm sure it's the same chap as well!

You could always take both photos along to the museum if you're in the area and see what they have to say. They're based in Warrington at:

Peninsula Barracks
Warrington
Cheshire
WA2 7BR
England

Hmmm I am not far away but housebound right now (recovering from an operation)
Wonder if I could email them the photos maybe, have to give them a call now & see.

I kind of thought turn of the centuary to end of WW1 given the handlebar style moustache cos I have seen photos of WW1 generals & the like with them.

now to figure out who he is, I will let you know what the museum says.

Thank You

Just called them & the man I spoke to said to email them over including the close up of the cap badge & he will take a look at them this week for me  Cheesy

If it is south lancs then my money will be on Bibby - or even a generation earlier Savage.
Thinking about it the first of my Smiths in the area is my gt-grandad Thomas, and he arrived in early 1900s so hopefully he ISNT a smith!
