Northallerton Jail
« on: Saturday 13 June 09 01:22 UTC (UK) »

Hi All

On the 1901 census one of my relatives is in Northallerton Jail.

Anyone know how I can findout what she was in for.

Have you tried searching the archives of the local newspaper? I think that it would be the Northern Echo for Northallerton. If you post the name of the person concerned I will have a look for you.

(Co-incidently - I used to work there myself in the 1980s - as a teacher - my classroom was in the old Governor's house!)

Regards

I would email the North Yorks Records Office and ask if they have the prison records for 1901. If they have you  can then pay them to do a search for what they have on him.

(I had an ancester in the jail in 1851 and they did a search for me and gave me details of what he was in for and details of the trial)

Good luck

Hi

Thank you davidft & Nell.

She was from Middlesbrough, so possibly it was in the Evening Gazette.

Northallerton Jail must have been where they where sent in those days.

I will go to the Library when I can and have a look, if no luck there, I will Email the records office as you suggest.

Thank you again Kathc

My 2 x great grandmother was in Northallerton prison in 1891 ( and on several other occasions in the late 1880s/ early 1890s). A friend who was visiting NYCRO was able to find full details of her criminal offences and I subsequently found newspaper reports ( Northern Echo) to coincide with each time she was on trial.

I intend to look into what this Great Aunt was in Northallerton Jail for, in the summer holidays, that's the only time I can have a full day to myself,

I appreciate all the help the rootschaters have given me.

Thank you Jen
