Thanks for the interesting information Hugh and Trish.
It is much appreciated.
I believe that Thomas Butterell was born in Rossington in 1772 and if he died in 1847 his age 75,fits.
He married Ann Thompson in 1799 in Arksey and had had 3 children as far as I can determine. Edwin, Thomas and William.
Thomas married Mary Ryals, William married Mary Ann Leadbeater and Edwin married Sarah Leadbeater.

I thought that Crookes Nether Hallam was just an area and not necessarily a school.

You are correct.  'Crookes' here is the address, meaning the main road through what was essentially the village of Crookes. It just happens to also be the name of the house.

I think the school would have been known as 'Mrs Smith's School'.
