I am seeking the birth of Joseph Leadbeater Butterell who was born to Edwin Butterell and Sarah Leadbeater in Sheffield between 1816 and 1825. This is one of my "brickwalls!" Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Don Poore.

My Amazing Mother 1912-1982

Hi Again Don
No luck with baptism so far and also cannot find marriage with my resources.
I have found Joseph with parents 1841 Census; Sarah appears to have died by 1861, but Edwin is still on census entries til 1881
1841 Census Shales Moor Sheffield YKS HO107/1335/14/Sheffield
Edwin BUTHRELL, 40, grocer Sarah, 45 Joseph, 15 All born in county
1861 Edwin, widow, is with his Uncle aged 87 Under name of Batterall, he has become a shepherd on his uncles farm
1851 they are under Batterall and have daughter Sarah Ann, 4? ( could be 21) + nephew Joseph Leadbeater, aged 12 with them. Edwin is born 1800 Rossington, Sarah 1794 Sheffield
Sarah Ann goes on to marry Andrew Bright 3 June 1861 Rossington.
I have looked for a baptism for her also with no luck. Hopefully someone else will.
Cheers, Trish

Hi Trish, Many thanks again. Edwin was my gt,gt,grandfather whose son Joseph came out to Australia and married in 1852 in Melbourne. Edwin was not only a grocer in Sheffield but was a Census Enumerator for part of Sheffield in 1841. You have "blown me away" with the 1861 info. for which I thank you so much. Kind regards, Don.

Do you have a death date for Edwin? From memory it was 1882 Staffordshire/living with another daughter I think.
If you want the other census details etc. just ask

3 Shrewsbury Hospital Sheffield,YKS ... These seem to be separate little cottages/apts attached to the Hospital as most people seem to have visitors or servants The 'Hospital' consists of almshouses, which still exist. Here is an engraving: http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/s07439.jpg
From White's 1919/20 Directory of Sheffield:
SHREWSBURY HOSPITAL, founded in 1616 by Gilbert, 7th Earl of Shrewsbury, K.G., occupies a site fronting Norfolk Road, and extending at the back to Talbot Place, the buildings, which are of stone in the Tudor Gothic style, forming three sides of a parallelogram, with a chapel in the centre of the longest side. The patronage of this Hospital is vested in the Dukes of Norfolk, and the estates in certain trustees. The Hospital now affords dwellings for 20 poor men and 20 poor women, with a weekly allowance of 14s. to each of the former, and 10s. 6d. to each of the latter. They are allowed four tons of coal per annum, a blue coat or gown once in two years, and an overcoat or mantle once in seven years. There are also 125 out-pensioners, each of whom receives 7s. a week. The pensioners should be "poor, indigent people of the town and parish of Sheffield," 60 years of age or upwards, and who have been in business, or in an independent position, tenants of the Duke of Norfolk having a preference.

Baptisms from http://www.sheffieldindexers.com
Buttrell, Edwin (of Sheffield, born 1832-03-14). Baptised May 23, 1832, by Wm Smith at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield. Parents name(s) are Sarah & Edwin (Grocer).
Butterill, William (of Sheffield, born 1834-06-26). Baptised August 13, 1834, by J Gibson at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield. Parents name(s) are Sarah & Edwin (grocer).
Butterill, Charles (of Sheffield, born 1836-10-15). Baptised December 2, 1836, by J Gibson at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield. Parents name(s) are Sarah & Edwin (Grocer).
Buttrell, Marian Leadbeater (of Sheffield, born 1836-08-08). Baptised September 2, 1836, by Wm Harris at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield. Parents name(s) are Mary Ann & William (grocer).
The transcribers of these records are working backwards from 1842, and baptisms back to 1830 are now available on the site, so they have not yet reached the likely volumes for Joseph. They will eventually reach 1812.
The following is from an index, original in Sheffield Archives:
Marriage at Sheffield Parish Church (SS Peter & Paul, now the Cathedral) Volume 'Q' page 455 entry 1365 (volume covers Dec 1818-Dec 1821) Edwin BUTTERELL Sarah LEADBEATER

Don,
Blimey, I just found a message from 2000 where you were looking for the baptism of Joseph. Hope it won't be long now!
If you seach the burials on the Sheffield Indexers site you will find Edwin who died in 1882, and is buried in City Road cemetery. I think it may be a public grave.

Hi Hugh, I have Edwin Butterell, Sarah Butterell and Joseph in the 1841 Census for Shalesmoor, Sheffield but cannot find their other children, Edwin, born in 1832, William born in 1834, and Charles born in 1836. Any ideas? Any help would be most appreciated. Don.

hello Trish,
That's Ellen Smith's school in Crookes House. She was the widow of a Wesleyan Minister. It was a girl's school so slightly surprising to find William there - perhaps they made an exception for Sarah's little brother.
The building is still there but the address is now Sackville Road as other buildings were built between the gable end and Crookes. The grounds have also been built on.
A newspaper advertisement:
Sheffield Mercury 14 Jan 1837 page 11b
EDUCATION CROOKES HOUSE, NEAR SHEFFIELD
MRS. SMITH begs leave to announce to her Friends and the Public, that she has removed, during the Christmas Recess, to CROOKES HOUSE, near Sheffield, late the Residence of T. Branson, Esq., Solicitor. The Situa- tion is peculiarly open and salubrious; the House very commodious, with Gardens and Grounds attached, calcu- lated to promote the health and comfort of the Pupils, and commands one of the most interesting and extensive Prospects in the neighbourhood of Sheffield. The special regard shewn to the mental improvement and religious instruction of the Young Ladies entrusted to Mrs SMITH’s care, will, it is hoped, continue to ensure the confidence of Parents, and to secure to the Children the highest advantages, present and future. A Wesleyan Chapel has been recently opened in the immediate vicinity. References are kindly allowed to the Rev.G.Marsden, E.Grindrod, G.B.McDonald, S.D.Waddy, F.Calder, A. Bell, Manchester; and W.H.Clarkson, Wakefield; H. Longden, Esq., T.Branson, Esq., and J.H.Smith, Esq., with other respectable Gentlemen in Town and Country. The School will re open January 24th.
