Social Security Cards - Are they worth getting?
« on: Saturday 13 June 09 09:16 UTC (UK) »

Can some one tell me what sort of information would be on an application for a Social Security card. Is it worth buying a copy of one and would it have the persons maiden name on it?

I ordered this application before the large jump in price.  It is the only information that confirms my great grandmother's maiden name.

Here are the questions on a SS card application from 1942:

2.
Present Mailing Address:
City:
State:
3.
Full Name Given You At Birth:
4.
Age at Last Birthday

6.

7.
Father's Full Name, Regardless of Whether Living or Dead
8.
Mother's Full Name Before Ever Married, Regardless of
               Whether Living or Dead
9.
Sex:
10.
Race
11.
Have You Ever Before Applied for Social Security Acc't # or
                                                     Railroad Retirement #
12.
Business Name and Address of Employer, address
13.

Thanks for that, might be worth getting one. Where did you order them from? I've seen that you can get them via RootsWeb for $27, seems a bit steep!

Rootsweb.com has a letter that can be generated to help you, but all orders go through the Social Security Administration.  $27 is the current price.

Thanks Shelly, so I guess that it is all done by mail and not electronically. I'll have to investigate further.

Here's a link to the Social Security Administration's website page where you can order the original application for a social security card online:
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps7/eFOIA-FEWeb/internet/main.jsp

You can order the original application for $27 or an extract for $16 but the extract does not have as much information.

Hello Jacquie, yes I did find that page, unfortunately the application process won't accept my English address so it looks like I'll have to do it by snail mail!  Sad

I was wondering what the difference was between the original and the computer extract, guess I'll be going with the original. I do need 2 though so $54 is lot to splash out, I did find an old posting on the Ancestry site saying that they were $3, thats a bit of a price hike, even in the intervening years!!!!  Shocked
