William was b. 1860 or 1861 to Margaret Cumming, a wool mill worker in Old Machar, the second of three illegitimate children.  Is there anyone with information about his descendants?

Hi lawrenceb,

Is this his birth? It's an extracted entry from the IGI.

William Cumming, b. 30th November 1861 Old Machar - mother Margaret Cumming

There is an earlier birth for a William Spence Cumming in 1857, but he was the son of Thomas Cumming and Mary Jack.

Hi ev,

I'm glad you've found him! I checked everywhere and had no luck ... think I need a refresher's course in census results. Grin

Pretty sure I've found him in 1901 with wife and children. Note daughter Maggie C. - likely Cumming as her middle name.

Address: Fern Cottage, Newhills, Aberdeenshire
William Spence, head, mar., 38, granite quarry worker, b. Old Machar
Annie Spence, wife, mar., 31, -, b. Old Machar
Maggie C. Spence, dau., unm., 12, scholar, b. Newhills
William Spence, son, unm., 5, scholar, b. Newhills
Jeannie S. Spence, dau., unm., 4, -, b. Newhills
Flora B. Spence, dau., unm., 2, -, b. Newhills

Found his death at 85 Closefield (?) Gardens, Bucksburn.

William Spence (formerly Cumming) died March 5th 1947 aged 85. He was the widower of 1) Annie Burnett and 2) Annie Duncan (?) Walker. William Spence, son, signed his death certificate.

Some info on the children from 1901:

Margaret Cumming Spence (b. c. 1889 Newhills) died 1915 at St Machar, aged 26. Her married name was Fraser.
Jeanie Sutherland Spence (b. 1897 Newhills) died 1970 at Bucksburn, aged 72. Her married name was Lumsden.
Flora Barclay Spence (b. 1898 Newhills) died 1965 at Aberdeen (South. Dist.), aged 66. Her married name was Kemp.

William will be harder to find, but there's a possible in 1961, aged 65.

Thank you to everyone for the information on William's descendants.  I had been looking for him as William Cumming, whoops!  I am pursuing all 3 of Margaret's children:  Euphemia Trail Cumming died around 1889, as she doesn't appear in the 1891 census, now I know about William.  I have Elizabeth Stewart to go after, b. 1848.  Margaret went after Euphemia's father for what we would call child support: his last name was the same as that of her brother-in-law, Trail.  I haven't been able to prove the family connection yet.  Thanks again, Grin

I would suggest that the address is possibly 85 Cloverfield Gardens.
