Alice Stephenson
« on: Saturday 13 June 09 11:33 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for Alice/Thomas Stephenson from south shields - I can find her after 1861 but neither of them (or their kids) on the 1851 and 1841 census forms.

Alice was married to Thomas Stephenson (date unknown but around 1835-1838 I believe)

They had at least 3 children , William abt 1838 and Alice & Ann abt 1843.

They should be in south shields area during this time as they lived there before and after 1841-1851. Thomas is believed to have been a sailor.

Hi there

Could we have some dates and places of birth  for the couple Alice & Thomas please?

And the reference for the 1861 Census if possible, so we can take a look.

Cheers  Smiley

Both are born in south shields around 1809 - Thomas is dead by the 1861 census.

Hi,

Are you certain the father's name was Thomas? Do you have a child's birth cert?

I can't see a marriage for Thomas/Alice, apart from one in 1844 and that Thomas was a pitman, but there's this one for James/Alice
Jarrow  St. Paul's Church
20 Oct 1828 James Stephenson, of this parish married Alice Angus, of this parish

I can see a James & Alice Stephenson in 1841 census Westoe (HO107 Piece 298 Book  7  Folio 7 Page  8 )

and this same family is in Westoe in 1851 and shows James with wife Ellen, (possibly a mistake for Alice), same children, and the ages of children Alice 1834, William 1838, and Ann 1844 match with your 1861 census. (HO107  Piece  2399  Folio 317 Page 54)

I can give you full details if you don't have census access

James was a Pilot

Iam actually doing some searching for a friend of mine as a favour - Ive found quite a bit down the other family lines but this one has been a pig from the start  Smiley

Thomas' name came from another of his relatives who has already done some basic research so I ve not seen the evidence she has. I'll have to have a word with him and see what evidence he has.

If your family in 1861 is correct, then I think they belong to James

You need to go back to one of the children, whichever line you're researching back from, and see if there's a birth cert or a marriage cert naming the father and his occupation.  Which child's parents are you trying to trace?

They were the only Alice, William and Ann (with other older siblings) that I could see in South Shields 1841 & 1851 and James & his family don't seem to be anywhere else in 1861.

So if the father was Thomas, the 1861 probably isn't the right one.  Undecided

- what do you think, Ambly?

Hi Barbara and ss002d6252

I agree Barbara! I was about to post exactly the same answer    Grin    aside from the marriages part, which I hadn't looked at. The 1861 (where daughter Alice  is 27, b abt 1834 not 1843) all points to the 1841 and 1851 Barbara found - with the name of the mother being incorrectly stated in 1851 (they are at the same street address in '51 as in .41).

Cheers

Thanks Ambly, I forgot to mention the addresses  Embarrassed

ss002d6252, there are at least two possible Thomas Stephensons in 1851 census in South Shields area, none married to an Alice, one is a pilot and one a mariner, so I think it best if you ask your friend for more details about the child she's working back from, and then come back to us and we'll try to help further

Kind regards
Barbara

In 1851,  there is a  William STEPHENSON 30, Pilot, on the page before James & "Ellen", and a Richard? STEPHENSON 31, Pilot,  on the same page.

James & Alice do have a son Thomas age 9 in 1841. It's Laine?  Buildings in 1841, and 34 Laine?  in 1851 which may or may not tie in with a birth cert. of your friend's family. I think it's Laine? Barbara  Undecided but not sure!

Rotten writing!  The enumeration sheet in 1851 has 'the North side of a Lane behind Queen Street...'  not sure if that's what it refers to.

There's a John Stephenson (pilot) & family further on - maybe they're all related Undecided

Will wait now to see if your friend has more information  Smiley

I'll have to ask him for more details - it would be easier if I has the source documents.

I have a suspicion that the Stephenson's there are related.
