The I.G.I. shows ALEXANDER GIFFORD marrying an ELIZABETH POPE on the
23rd October, 1676  at Fenstanton, Huntingdon, England. Is this your couple?

That's about four miles from my house!

There's no such marriage in Hunts 1754-1837

When you said before 1800, I thought you meant just before, not 125 years before!
