thanks for that ive been lookin but cant find anything i think they might av got married in gillingham, but im really lookin for is any siblings and parents for him,
he married minnie annie lawrence in hanwell middlesex, 1897, and that they lived in medway rd gillingham kent in 1901
You did say you thought they married in Hanwell, Middlesex, but there was no marriage there for those names , so I think the Medway one will be correct.
The 1881 census has a John 13, James 11, and Louisa Simmonds 9, children in the Central London School, Hanwell, they are described as Scholars, Inmates supported by Poor Rates - wondering if they were orphans, you can see the census free here: http://www.rootschat.com/links/06hf/ but not convinced, they are with parents in 1871 and all born Southwark St. George, so not Ewhurst
Still trying to find JW in 1891 Barbara

not many dockyards near Ewhurst - I wonder if that PoB is a complete red herring ?
you can search the 1881 census by Occupation - there are a couple of Johns who are Dockyard Labourers, but none with a son born c1868 ....
I suspect that his Father's name is fabricated for delicate reasons, and that he may be on the 1871 etc census under a stepfathers name - and reverted to Simmonds on Marriage.

Hi
I presume you now have the marriage certificate, was it the Medway (Gillingham) one? Who were the witnesses. Mothers are not normally named on English marriage certificates.
If it was the Medway marriage perhaps his father had a change of occupation and was also living on the Kentish coast.

The 1911 census index shows Minnie Annie in Medway Kent district with children John Edward born circa 1898 William Robinson born circa 1899 Cyril Henry born circa 1902 Alfred Leonard born circa 1907 Frederick Charles born circa 1910
The actual census page would tell you Minnie Annie's status and whether she was a widow, or if not, John was away from home.
