Sorry I don't recognise the address
Quote
Gilmourish Neilston

can you clarify it ?

If you could provide further information it may be possible to provide more detailed information
e.g. the 1881 census has 72 Pattersons (of various spellings) listed in Neilston , this includes Thomas Pattison a boarder in the house at Gilmours Land, Stormyland, Neilston (a land in this context is a tenement building)

Thank you for your speedy response.

I got the name from a burial record, the owner of the lair being a James Paterson ( spelling as per burial records) of Gilmourish, Neilston.

The first burial in the lair was  1896, Ellen Paterson age 18 - the last was 1911, Margaret Paterson age 28.

Didn't know that 'land' meant a building - I have come across this before and thought it was an area - fantastic.

There is only one Ellen Paterson of the correct age listed in Neilston in the 1881 census
- she is listed as the grand daughter of James Gallacher aged 66 a Hawker born Ireland the family are listed as living in ferguson's land neilston.

Thanks once again - would the Ferguson of Ferguson's Land be the owner/factor of the building.

Did being a hawker mean that they were really poor - what kind of things might be sold and where would he get them from?

The Ferguson of Ferguson's Land would either have been the original landowner or the builder who bought the land and constructed the building - rather in the manner of a property speculator today.

As to a Hawker - they could sell anything - buy cheap and sell for a profit , they would obviously know what would sell in "their" area and potential income depended entirely upon how good they were at their job.
