XP CD Burner - Not working
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 07:18 UTC (UK) »

I have been using my XP Burner, without any problems until a few days ago.

I've used this one (numerous times) because it was so easy for me. Although I think I have another installed - could be InCD - Nero??. I'm not too sure that it still there, because the Icon's not showing in the tray now.

This is what's happening - I right click on the data - send to CD/RW Drive (F), the message appears in the try - you have files to burn etc. The CD Writing Wizard appears - then the message please insert a Writable disk in drive , which I have done, but the message I keep getting is - there is not disk in the drive. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the disks that I have inserted.

Appreciate any help in solving this problem.

Thanks - Sarra

OS - Win XP - SP 3.

It is a problem a lot of people get.  Is the blank CD defective or is the program at fault?  If you try another blank CD from the same container you might get a repeat of the error message, which could mean the entire batch is defective or the program is at fault for misdiagnosing a problem with the disks.

If you keep getting this error message with other blank disks then try using another program to see if it can write to the disk.  Try this free burner:

Downside,

I've managed to find my InCD - it was showing when I powered up this afternoon.

I have tried various disks without success.  I sent data to the InCd program and I got a similar message - a supported Media is not inserted in drive.

Is there any way I can check the F drive to see if it is dead or whatever.

My CD -Rom drive works fine - but that is on E Drive.

I'm really lost not being able to burn CD's. Sad

Thanks for your help.

You could have a look in Device Manager to see if there are any warning triangles against the drive.

Here is Microsoft's answer or list of things to check:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q316529

If you have not cleaned the laser lens for a long while then possibly that needs cleaning.

I presume if none of those solutions work then your writable CD drive may need replacing.

Hi could I add to and slightly hijack this thread?

I have found that Windows Media Player will usually find an appropriate cd/dvd in my cd/dvd burner (purchased new with new pc last August and used less than a dozen times) but sometimes it will insist on asking for a blank/new disk when I want to burn info/music. Most of the time I can open and reclose the cd/dvd player/burner with the same new cd/dvd in it to get things going. (No warning triangles or messages so the pc is saying I don't know why I'm not working but I'll have a go if you try, try and try again....)

However the player or the programme (I don't know which is being difficult  Embarrassed) refuses to accept a newly formatted (using windows) disk. I discovered that once when not being ready to burn I was presented with the possibility of formatting and thought it the thing to do; I was brought up on floppies and diskettes....

My question is, does any RC wizard have an idea why formatted cd's are no good at all or was I just exceptionally unlucky introducing one?

Thanks, falcybe (on Vista)

The only CD/DVD discs I format are ±RW type discs.
±R discs are write once, read many times.
Unless somebody else posts different, I would say you have been lucky.
(I use Nero to burn CD/DVD discs and have never formatted a ±R disc)

Just an update for everyone who tried to help me.

Had to call a Techie (a family member) in the end - the problem was the F-Drive had hit the dust. So I'm just waiting until he has time to purchase one and install it for me.

I was hoping it was something I could fix myself (with guidance from R/C's).

Thanks all you R/C for your help and suggestions.
