I am a descendant of William Kelly who died on 7 March 1797, aged 65, and is buried in Carnmoney Old Churchyard along with 4 of his infant sons. His descendants include a number of William Kellys, James Hodges Kellys plus Robert Kellys and John Kellys. I should like to hear from any other known descendants of "Auld Billy" or from other Kellys with Carnmoney connections, especially if one of them holds the family bible, last seen by my grandmother in 1913. I should especially like to know from whence in Scotland the family came.

You might find this link works better if you click on it than the one above

I also vagely remember reading somewhere about Kelly's and training racehorses in Carnmoney - do you know if they had any links with the McKinneys of Sentry Hill in Carnmoney?

Thanks both. Will try. Yes, my ancestors get a mention in William Fee McKinney's "stud book" - a handwritten genealogy of his family and neighbours (to be seen at PRONI). It relates how one of the family, William Kelly, born 1845, was shot dead by another local man, James Green, on 10 August 1875, leaving behind pregnant widow Agnes ("Nancy", nee Dougherty) and children Ellen, John & Sarah. I know very little about what the family did during the Carnmoney years, nor exactly how they were connected with the McKinneys (they don't get a mention in Brian Walker's book "Sentry Hill") but my own GGGF moved to Belfast at some stage with the industrial revolution, changing his work from farming to gardening and his descendants were shipyard workers and sailors. 'Love to know where you read about the racehorse training Kellys, Saz - it sounds likely. Tks.

Hi Kellysgirl Sorry can't remember where I read it. I have an interest in McKinney's and feel sure Kelly is one of the names mentioned somewhere in connection with training horses. I am also from Carnmoney (many years ago now) and am researching my family history. I will keep a look out for your name too - perhaps we are related in some way!

Hi Saz, Thanks. I see you have Kirkpatrick as one of your names of interest. My GGF (James Kelly, born 1801) married one Agnes (Nancy) Kirkpatrick in Carnmoney, though I am the descendant of his second marriage to Anne Jane Christie. I also have Gordons, Girvans, Lairds, Russells, Stewarts, Rowneys, McBrooms, Spences and Starrs in the Antrim FT. I visited Carnmoney last year and was impressed with the hill, the views and the new Presbyterian church, plus the very friendly folks.
Good luck with the FH research.

I'm doing a one name study of the surname McBROOM. Any help you could offer would be most appreciated. I have pretty much everybody who ever existed in Scotland and now want to cover Ireland.

Message for the Luddite re McBrooms: My grandfather's sister, Jane Kelly, born Belfast 1885, married one Walter McBroom, a ship's carpenter (later a caretaker) in 1909 at Duncairn Methodist church, Belfast. Walter was born around 1876 and died on 11 April 1954 aged 77 (buried Belfast city cemetery). He and Jane had two daughters, (Alice) Evelyn b 1909 & Isabelle b 1911, and were living at 43 Upper Canning St, Belfast, in 1911 (census shows him as a shipwright). In later life, they lived at 21 Alexander Park, Belfast but for a brief time lived in seaside cottages at Larne. One of Walter's daughters married a man named Asher Carey. Walter's father was also named Walter McBroom, and he married (?) at Sinclair Seamans church on 31 August 1863 and was living at Meadow St, Shankill, according to Gritffith's valuation from the 1860s.
