Hi Gladys
Is that Philip Brown, surgeon? Was he married twice?
I see he had a wife called Ann in 1881 who was born in Stella
Here's a possible earlier marriage for him Gateshead Stella St. Cuthbert 7 Oct 1846 Philip Brown (bachelor, surgeon), full age, of Blaydon, son of Richard Brown (viewer) married Isabella Elsdon (spinster), full age, of Blaydon, daughter of Henry Elsdon (engineer)
although oddly, I can see a marriage on freebmd the same year Dec 1846 Gateshead 24 133 Brown Philip and on the same page Wilkinson Ann
were there 2 Philip Browns, both surgeons? Or was a mistake made with the first marriage I gave you

I looked at the area surrounding Washington - Chester le Street, Monkwearmouth, Lamesley, Penshaw, Heworth for a 1822 or so baptism for a Philip Brown and found nothing. Even looked for someone with a second name Phillip. (I don't have Boldon or Gateshead indexes)

At least you will know that his father was Richard, and his mother Mary, and that he had a younger sister Mary Ann who was later housekeeper for him before he married Ann (all details from the census)
I thought I'd found him in the transcripts in 1822, thinking like you, Janis, that Philip may have been a second name, but it was just Richard, son of Richard and Mary, and the father was a collier, which doesn't seem likely. In one census Philip's father Richard was a Railway inspector.
Gladys, if you'd like the census info, please let me know which you already have and which you need

Hello Barbara & Janis, there is only one Phillip Brown that i know of a Surgeon who marrid Isabella Elsdon 1846 and he did marry and Ann when i don`t know. I have the 1851 census some where for Phillip and Isabella which i will have to seek out but not just now. Is it Phillip`s father that you have census for cos i haven`t any of them. I do know now that Phillip`s father was Richard, great.
Thats Phillip and Isabella`s marriage at Stella right enough as Isabella`s father was Henry Esdon, super.
Thanks alot Janis for your kind help.
Regards Gladys.

Hello Barbara, your a star, thank you so much for all that. I think JenB sent me the 1851 census and i have`nt found it yet amongst all me papers and folders but am not sure about the 1861 census or the where abouts of Isabella. I looked on BT yesterday and found Mary Ann Brown 1823 also Hannah 1821 and have to look for Richard and any more including Phillip at Gateshead. I can look at Longbenton now on BT for Richard Brown the father`s bap, great.
Regards Gladys.

Hi Gladys,
I think JenB sent me the 1851 census and i have`nt found it yet amongst all me papers and folders Here is the 1851 census entry you wanted.
HO 107/ 2403/ Folio 180/ Page 20 Blaydon Staith, Blaydon
Isabella Brown, wife, mar, (No birthplace entered) Mary Brown, daur, 3, Durham Winlaton Dorathy Brown, 2, daur, Durham Winlaton Ellanor Brown, 3 months, daur, Durham Winlaton
As Andrea said earlier in this thread, Isabella's husband Philip was with his parents on the night of the 1851 census.
We have been unable so far to find a date of death for Isabella.
Although Philip was shown as married in the 1861 census, the fact that his sister was with him, acting as 'housekeeper' makes me wonder if Isabella had already died by that time.
In any event, Isabella was definitely gone by 1871, as Philip is shown married to an Ann, although we haven't found the marriage yet.
