Can anyone tell me what religion the Horsley Independent Church (near Ovingham) practised in the 1790s? I have a family member baptised there and I was hoping it might point to their chosen religion, or perhaps it was just a matter of convenience. Many thanks, Maggie.

Thanks for that reply, Gary. It definitely helps to get someone else's perspective. Maybe it was just the closest church to where they lived at the time. My problem is that I cannot find any other family members baptised there or elsewhere, so thought they may have been non-conformists of some sort. The religion may have helped focus my search. Thanks for your reply. Cheers, Maggie

Horsley was one of 17 "townships" that made up the Parish of Ovingham.
The authors of GenUKI site (section on Northumberland>Parishes) attempted to write the complete story on churches (various denominations) within each Parish.
Mention is made of Horsley Methodist Church and Horsley United Reform Church, and other churches in the area, connected to Wesleyan Methodist Circuit churches in Newcastle and Gateshead. -----------------------------------------------------------------
Although folk were free ( in Law) in 1790s to baptise their children in religion of their choice, the only legal way to marry ( in England and Wales) was in a Parish Church - i.e. an Anglican/Church of England ( Jewish folk and Quakers were exempt from this "restriction". This law was removed in 1837, when marriages in non- C of E churches were permitted- and also in Register Offices.
Genuki site has Ovingham Parish ( C of E ) marriages from 1679 to 1837 ( and some burials and baptisms)

Thankyou for both those suggestions. I have actually tried both !! No luck except for the one baptism at Horsley on the bmd registers webstite. Think my people were fairly itinerant. I know for sure that one family member was born at Newbrough, but does not appear in Cof E parish registers in that area, so I may have to try methodist records. Thanks for your helpful ideas. Cheers, Maggie
