Thank you Kris, Judith and Jenn. Lots of clues but some red herrings as well. However if her full name had been given initially it would have been found quickly but not in 1957.
Jenn I agree with you about the death cert....wonder what was the cause of death of death. Strange that the family had this tale of her dying on board in 1957.
Stranger still is this 1957 death cert in NSW. I searched using also sorts of wildcards and absolutely nothing. Only two McCLURE deaths in 1957 and both males...from memory.
Cheers Cando

Even stranger I think is the information on the other site presumably supplied from the cert. We all know that family stories are not always correct. Like Cando, I tried everything I could think of in the NSW deaths and nothing. (For all years after her arrival) I felt it must have been in Vic, as that is where they were ticketed to, but as it was not when expected Cando did not initially find it. Sadly no living cousin for Chevron, but at least she now has the correct answer.

But he might have married and had children. A look at the death or funeral notice might reveal a whole family still out there

Curious as to the family Mary was coming to. There are a few LUNEY marriages on the Vic indexes but looking at the death indexes none of them are chn of John LUNEY and Isabella THOMPSON. They all appear to have been born Vic. Whitepages lists one only for Vic and one only for NSW.
We can only wait for Judith's kind offer of a lookup on Thursday.

Melbourne Sun September 5, 1960
MCLURE - On Sept 2 at her sister's residence 61 Cornwell Rd, Sunshine Mary Thompson McClure, dearly beloved wife of the late Robert, beloved mother of John, loved sister of Margaret and sister-in-law of Hugh. At Rest. Unfortunately the Funeral notice is not photographed - it's on a fold of the paper, but the details of this lady's cremation from Cando.
There is no death notice for any MCCLURE in either Melbourne paper (Sun, The Age) for dates 10-15 June 1991. Looks to me, from the wording of Mary's death notice that John was not married - mind, he would have only been 24 at the time of her death so maybe later. Most unfortunate that there is no mention of the sister's married name.
The only thing, apart from ordering John's death cert, that I can think of is to contact Fawkner crematorium and see if they will tell you either the name of the funeral director or a contact person for either death. Some R'chatters have had good results this way.
Or see if a marriage for a Margaret LUNEY/LOONEY and Hugh someone can found. Nothing that fits on Victorian marriages up to 1942.
Cheers, Judith

The only thing I can think of is a rate record or title search for 61 Cornwall Road, Sunshine, and then knowing our luck, the sister and husband may have been tenants. I don't know how helpful the local council would be. Privacy Act
No marriage or death for a Margaret LUNEY in Vic to 1985.
Wonder if Chevron knows a little more about the sister or could search for a marriage in Ireland.
According to Fawkner website the funeral directors for John Luney McLURE were H King & Sons, Richmond - not listed with phone # and the whitepages link takes you to Tobin Bros. Obviously they have been taken over. Some firms will not give out information citing the Privacy Act.

Perhaps it is like that Margaret Luney married in Ireland. What a shame her married name wsn't mentioned.
I suppose if she was cremated the headstone might not reveal a lot of information either

Jenn there may only be a small plaque as Mary's and John's burial record shows -
Garden Of Remembrance 1 Comp. Roses Bed E Rose 31. Cremation Area/Companion Rose
I think I'll leave this now until Chevron responds and hopefully may be able to search for Margaret LUNEY's marriage, in Ireland.

Hello to you all again. First I must thank you all on the excellent search results. I have been trying to find this information for 5 to 10 years and you guys come up with it in 24 hours, just shows do not rely on some family stories. but I have been using the 1957 death of Mary as a starting point. I have checked the 1910 census for the Luney family. John and Isabella Luney had 9 children Jane 19 Robert T 17 William 15 Agnes T 12 Isabella V 10 Hanna J 8 Mary T 6 John 4 Margaret C 1 if this is the same Margaret C I will have to see if I can find some information on her, as I'm in Canada I have to do this over the internet or long distant phone calls
Also thank you for the PMs Chevron

Hi Chevron
There is a result for a birth for a Margaret LUNEY in 1906 in Scotland. However my credits have expired to view the result and for some reason I am having problems trying to add credits
Searched to 1933 but no result for a marriage for Margaret LUNEY in Scotland.
Had a quick trawled of the deaths from 1960 to 1985 in Vic and cannot see a death that ties in with the dob of Margaret C. 2nd given name will help but married name would enable us to search the cemetery records that are available if she died post 1985.
