McGowan Family - Kinlough, Co. Leitrim
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 17:39 UTC (UK) »

I am researching the family of Rose McGowan who emigrated from County Leitrim to Attleboro, Massachusetts in the 1870s.  Rose, b. 1825, is listed as a widow on the Attleboro 1880 census, with adult children Barbara, Rose, Terrence, and Kate. She also had a married daughter at the time, Bridget McGowan Turley, and I believe that there was another daughter, Margaret/Maggie, and a son who died in infancy...7 children total, 5 daughters and 2 sons.  Bridget was most likely the eldest, born approx. 1849, and the entire family was undoubtedly Catholic.  Mother Rose was married to Daniel McGowan in Ireland, and I have come across an insurance document for daughter, Barbara McGowan Brennan, which lists her birthplace as Kinlough, Co. Leitrim. Barbara also lists her father as dying in 1865 of typhoid fever. Lastly, Barbara's death certificate lists her mother's maiden name as Rose Clancy, but I have found no other evidence of this. Any info on this particular family would be greatly appreciated. I know that there are many McGowan families in this part of Ireland.  Thank you!

Hi i did a check on

http://leitrim.brsgenealogy.com/

And there is a Rose Clancy getting married in 1845 in Manorhamilton Banns (RC) and their also a Daniel MacGowan getting married in 1845 same place. The records are only indexed so cannot be sure if this will give correct marriage. Registering for the site is free but the records are pay per view at 5 euro ago.

From Massachusetts Vital Records

I found the marriage of Luke Brennan and Barbara McGowan on 11th Sept 1884 in Attleboroug, Massachusetts

Luke Brennan aged 36 born Ireland parents Owen and Ann Hayden married Barbara McGowan 31 born Ireland daughter of Daniel and Rosanna McGowan

Also 12th April 1877 in Attleboroug, Massachusetts

John Turley aged 29 born Ireland son of Michael and Catherine married Bridget McGowan aged 28 born Ireland daughter of Daniel and Rosa

Thanks so much, Gerard!  I will try to look into the Leitrim marriage record.  I already had the Mass Vital Records - in addition to several US church records.  Any tips on researching in Ireland (on the cheap) would be greatly appreciated.  Kindest regards, Jane
