Janet Melrose
« on: Monday 15 June 09 06:54 BST (UK) »

For years I have been trying to discover the birthdate of my gt, gt, grandmother Janet Melrose who married Alexander Georgeson(a shoemaker) in 1828 in St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh.
She was the daughter of William Melrose( Melross) who in the register of marriages was called a porter dealer.
I would appreciate any help about this lady.

Hi Don,

This looks like the Georgesons in 1841. Jane/Janet were common variants of each other in Scotland, along with Jean and Jessie.

Address: 87 Princes Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian
Alexr. Georgeson, m, 35, boot maker, b. in county
Jane Georgeson, f, 30, -, b. in county
Alexr. Georgeson, m, 10, -, b. in county
Janet Georgeson, f, 8, -, b. in county
Mary Georgeson, f, 7, -, b. in county
Isabella Georgeson, f, 5, -, b. in county
Willm. Georgeson, m, 4, -, b. in county
Jess Watt, f, 15, female servant, b. in county

I can't easily see them in 1851 to narrow down a birth date and place for Janet. Did they move from Scotland?

Hi Hume,
I do have that info.
Alexander and his family all came to Melbourne via New Zealand and Sydney in 1850. They all married and died here.
On Janet's death certificate her age was given as 84 by her son William. She died in 1888 which means she would have been born C.1804,5.
The certificate also states her place of birth as Edinburgh.
I have a page from the book " William Melrose in China" which has the family tree of a William Melrose who was born n 1783. Maybe the father!!!??? This Melrose Family was connected to The Melrose Tea family.

Thanks for your help Hume. It is much appreciated.
