I'm trying to research the family of Edwin Poole, who was born about 1866-68 in Lapworth or Hockley Warwickshire according to the 1891--1911 census returns.
By 1890 he was living in Glamorgan where he married Elizabeth Davies and on the marriage certificate his father was named as John Poole (deceased). Edwin and his wife and children continued to live in Glamorgan until his death.
I have not been able to find a family with a father called John and son Edwin in the 1871 and 1881 census returns, although I have found a family with a son Edward born in 1867 in Lapworth. He is missing from the family in 1881, but I did find an Edwin Pool living with another family as a servant.
There are two problems with this family being the correct one, which leads me to ask two questions: 1) Is it likely that Edward was a transcription error and that the child was in fact Edwin, or were Edwin and Edward variants of the same name? 2) John was still living in 1901, despite him being shown as deceased on Edwin's marriage cert in 1890. Could that have been an error, or given the distance between father and son (Glamorgan and Warwickshire) is it possible that Edwin could have assumed that his father was deceased? Has anyone else seen this (decesased) on a marriage cert even though they know the father to have been living at the time?

Possible birth reg;
Edwin POOLE December 1866 King's.N. 6c 438
Kings N is Kings Norton and spans the borders of Warrickshire,Staffordshire and Worcestershire.
It may be worth looking for John and son Edwin living in those counties too in 1871 Census

Hi farmeroman
If you say John was deceased then I suppose this can't be him on the 1891. Is this the family you have in the 1871 census? RG10 / Piece 3191 / Folio 73 / Page 23
RG12 / Piece 2466/ Folio 62 / Page 22
I did have a George Edwin who was down in the censuses as either George and/or Edwin.

I agree that the 1866 Edwin is a strong possibility, but the KN registration district does not include Lapworth or Knowle where my Edwin claimed to have been born; they are both in the Solihull district, where Edward was born...
Steve.

Wendy Wendy, Yes, that is the same family. I was just wondering if it was possible that the deceased comment on Edwin's marriage certificate was a mistake or somehow "convenient" given the fact that Edwin was by then living in Wales and may have lost contact with the rest of his family.
I didn't manage to find a George Edwin, but I did find a George E, but he was still living in B'ham, in 1891 and was married to a Jemima.
I think the next step is to get the birth certificate for the 1866 Edwin from Kings Norton and see who his father was; if it's John, fine, but if not Edward could still be a possibility, however remote.
Steve.

So the birth Wendy found may be a better option as it is reg Solihull or have you already purchased that cert?

Trish, I've plotted the King's Norton and Solihull registration districts in different colours on Google Earth and it gives an interesting picture. On the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses Edwin claims to have been born in Knowle (Solihull), Lapworth (Solihull) and Hockley (in the KN area). I'll order his birth certificate today and let you know the outcome. Steve.

Bit of a disater really. Edwin Poole born 9/11/1866 in Barn Hill Kings Norton. Mother Martha Poole, no maiden name and no father, so I assume that she was unmarried and doubt that the father was John Poole. Maybe Edwin lied about his father's name on his marriage certificate and it was John "something else". Back to square one?

I guess it's another of those annoying ones. I can't find Martha on the 1851, 1861 or 1871 (with Edwin) censuses either, which is odd. I wonder if she "adopted" the father's surname for the birth certificate?
