Marriages in Portpatrick
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 15:08 UTC (UK) »

Hi

A pair of my ancestors appear to have married in Portpatrick although they originated from Dublin. I have no idea as to why they married there. However, there seem to have been a lot of Irish people from all walks of life married in Portpatrick around that time. See the following link.

Does anyone have any idea why this should be so?

I did think about elopements but quite a few seem to have brought family as witnesses.

Not sure if it's a great many really - 235 in 126 years is only an average of 1.86 a year. It might be interesting to see which years had the most of these type of marriages. Also,  to find the % of all marriages in Portpatrick in the same period.

I might work it out later  Grin

Portpatrick was the an important port in the 18th and  for most of the 19th century but lost out to Stranraer later on.

A quick calculation -

On the IGI there are  1616 marriages listed between 1720 and 1854 - or roughly 808 couples - have not taken into account the double entries, patron submissions,  etc. This gives an average of around 6 marriages per year so...............

about a third of marriages in Portpatrick had at least one person who was of Irish origin.

Haven't looked to see if any of these were soldiers (I think there were a fair number stationed in Ireland during the period).

Interesting though  Smiley

Gadget,

Thanks for your interest.

I have done some digging around and it seems that Portpatrick was the Gretna Green of Ireland until 1826 when the Church Courts decided to do something about the practice. So it does look like an elopement. Wish I knew why.
