1841 lookup request Annesley
« on: Tuesday 08 November 05 09:12 UTC (UK) »

Please would some kind soul look up a family for me in the Annesley 1841 census if possible?

I am searching for Robert Cornelius Tocock, born 1811 in Finchampstead, Berks, his wife Martha, born 1808 in Heckfield, Hants, and their two children Henry Tocock, born 1836 Annesley, and Ann Tocock born 1840 Annesley.

Robert was a huntsman/groom.

Many thanks!

Best wishes, Jennie

Thanks a million, Heather - surely this must be them.  Could Matthias/Matthew be his wife, Martha??

The children's names/ages are correct!

Thanks so much!

Dear Jennie,

I have just found Robert Tocock in my family tree.

Ok..it is a side line, my Grandfather's sisters line, but I wonder if you have found Robert's marriage?  He was born in Finchampstead in 1811.

His children are in Annesley in 1841, and it looks as if he is calling himself Matthew!

I managed to track him in most census years, but in 91 (I think) he uses the name Cornelius.

His daughter, Ann married Thomas Austin, and it is his daughter, Mary Louisa Austin who is connected to the Bullock family.  I have a picture of Louisa.

Anyway, if you can help, I would be very grateful.

Regards,

Mick Henry  (Vicechair Sussex Family history Group)

Hi Mick

Yes, I can help you quite a bit with the Tocock line. Yes, (Cornelius) Robert Tocock's family were in Annesley in the 1841 .. his wife was Martha Charlton (b1808 Heckfield, Hants), and they were married in Heckfield, Hants in 1834 (listed as Pocock!).

Since my original post here in 2005 I have traced Robert (who was baptised Cornelius Robert Tocock 22 Sept 1811 at Finchampstead) through all the censuses - and came across an amazing coincidence. In 1851, Robert was at Bulmershe House at Woodley, Reading, with his family. In 2005, exactly 154 years after Robert had lived there, and unknown to us, my daughter - Robert's great-great-great-great granddaughter - went off to uni at Reading and was resident in halls at ... Bulmershe House, Woodley, Reading!! Incredible. We only found Robert in the census there about three months after she moved into the halls there.

The whole Tocock line has been extensively researched by a wonderful lady called Polly, who traced three separate entire Tocock Trees before the internet existed. She contacted Tococks everywhere, and managed to link them all up into those three trees - which themselves are very probably linked too. If you are interested, I can send you Excel files of all three of Polly's Tocock trees, and I am sure Polly would be happy to give you further help if you need it.

Lastly, I have another contact from the Thomas Austin/Ann Tocock line ... his name is Peter and he is descended from Thomas Austin's sister, Mary Ann Austin. If you would like to contact him, I am sure he would be interested.

Best wishes, Jennie

Dear Jennie,

Many thanks for your reply and for all the information.

What a wonderful coincidence your daughter had.......genealogy can we quite wonderful sometimes.

Polly's trees would be great to see.  Could you e-mail them to (*)

If you could put me in touch with Peter, that would also be great.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

Mick
