Elizabeth Cook - christening/baptism
« on: Monday 15 June 09 10:03 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I am looking for a christening for Elizabeth Cook.  According to the 1851 Long Whatton Leics Census, in which she appears as Elizabeth Garner she was born in 'Bilstrip', Nottingham around 1766.

I am not sure where 'Bilstrip' is or if i have transcribed it correctly.

Can someone please help me to find a possible christening/baptism?

Thanks

Hi TB Smiley

You have transcribed it correctly. Unfortunately it seems there is no record of the place Roll Eyes

Only places I can find starting with a B are;

Beeston
Besthorpe
Bingham
Blidworth
Blyth
Boughton

There is a record of the marrriage though ( sorry if you have it)

William GARNER
Elizabeth COOK
19 November 1783
Long Whatton, Leicester, England
(submitted with batch no.)

Thanks for that Trish

I was hoping that there was an obvious answer and that my lack of local knowledge was all that was failing me!

I did have marriage although i am yet to identify all of their children as i only have William (1806) and Elizabeth (1811) both born in Nottingham - and i am not yet convinced that there may be a further generation between them and Elizabeth Garner(cook) and William Garner who married in 1783!

Certainly they both appear together on the 1841 Census although as relationships aren't included they could be Grandchildren?

If anybody has any other information i'd be happy to hear from you.

That looks extremely likely Sheila.

Thanks for that - now just for a christening and for confirmation of the children!

Hi TB Smiley

Hannah Garner aged 32 with Elizabeth on 1851 Census .

Baptism;
Hannah Doughty GARNER
15 November 1818, Long Whatton, Leicester
Mother; Dorothy GARNER

Baptism;
Dorothy GARNER
About 8 June 1802
St Mary Nottingham, Nottingham
Parents; William Garner and Elizabeth

On the batch there are 3 Williams born 1795/1800/1805 + other siblings.
Could William be the son of William and Elizabeth married 1783. If he married an Elizabeth also confusion reigns Roll Eyes
His parents could still be having children also Tongue.

If you just search Garner on batch there is a William and Judith Maria having children also.

Bear with me here as I am trying to sort this out in my head Shocked

1841 Census has William and Elizabeth aged 75 and Hannah Garner aged 20 + Hanah FOX aged 4

Next door are William GARNER, 35, wife Eleanor 35 + Elizabeth FOX 30 and Frances Fox 5mths.
There are other Foxes on same page.

So Hannah Garner aged 20, is the grand-daughter from 1851 Census, Mother Dorothy Garner, daughter of W&E married 1783.

William Garner 35,  and Elizabeth Fox 30, children of William and Elizabeth or grandchildren?

Marriage;
Elizabeth GARNER
Joseph FOX
17 November 1828 Long Whatton, Leicester

Thanks Trish

That generally confirms what i have.  My starting point was Joseph Fox and Elizabeth Garner who married in 1828.  Their children were Thomas Fox (abt 1830 in Long Whatton), Hannah Fox (abt 1837 in Lowdham, Nottingham), John Fox (abt 1840 in Long Whatton) and Francis Fox (Dec 1841 in Lowdham, Nottingham - mother Elizabeth Garner from certificate).

As you say in 1841 Elizabeth Fox is living next door to the Garner's (William 'senior' and Elizabeth her parents?) with her brother William 'junior' Garner, his wife Selena (not Eleanor as you have stated) and her young son Francis.  Hannah her daughter is living with William 'senior' and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's husband Joseph is not with them and what i have discovered is that he is apparently living under a pseudonym of William Cook, together with sons Thomas and John living in Lowdham Nottingham.  This is a name that is also adopted in 1851 when Elizabeth rejoins them together with children John, Hannah and Francis.  Why he used this name i do not know although his mother's maiden name was Mary Cook (born abt 1781 in Long Whatton) and his wife's mother was Elizabeth Cook (who heads up this enquiry!).  By 1861 he became Joseph Fox again and had remarried following the death of his wife Elizabeth Fox (nee Garner) in 1857. I am not sure of the 1851 Census that you have found - is that with Elizabeth 'senior'?

And that is where i am at.  It is only the interwined relationship of the families on the 1841 census that leads me to believe that William 'senior' and Elizabeth Garner are Elizabeth Fox's (nee Garner) parents and that William 'junior' is her brother.

If anyone else can shed anymore light on these families i would be most grateful.

Thanks in advance.
