Hi - I'm a new member here. I am trying to trace my ancestors from Chard, Somerset. Found graves and dates but cannot find anything about the history of the Mitchell family who were Wine & Spirit Merchants and Brewers in the town until 1902. Francis Harris Mitchell was Mayor of Chard in 1901. Any help in finding the history of this family would be appreciated

I assume you have the census records for the family??
It seems francis was mayor in 1891 (age 30) -also Wine merchant and Managing director of brewery company - he lived in Brewery house hight St Chard- his father was a wine merchant and look s like he started the brewery company

Hi - thanks for your reply - yes I have all the Census records, birth, death and marriage records etc. Francis was Mayor of Chard twice, the last time being in 1901, but I am unable to find out anything about the brewery or the business. There is a mention in Kellys Directory and I believe the company was eventually called Brutton Mitchell Toms Ltd. but I cant find any other history of the company.

Thank you so much for your amazinginfo - have visited the site re the "settle" and found reference to my great uncle. I have e-mailed the Chard museum several times re info but have not received any reply from them. I am hoping to visit Chard in the near future and will visit the museum then.

This is also my first post
I Live in Axminster (about 8 miles from Chard) somewhere along the line there are Mitchell conections in Axminster.
I collect antique local bottles and have a nice early sealed wine bottle.On the emossed seal it has the following.
F & G W Mitchell Chard & Axminster.
I have tried to attach a picture but may not work,
I have had a number of Mitchell bottles over the years but all from Chard.As I mainly collect Axminster bottles its the ones with Chard and Axminster which interest me.I will have a look in Chard Museum over the next few weeks and see if I can help.Can anyone help with the Axminster connection ? I have had a quick look around but can not find any outlets -shops-inns for Mitchell in Axminster. ?

I was just looking on the system for anybody who might be interested in Brutton Mitchell Toms as I have a pack of playing cards with their name and trademark on.
From my local history I recal that BMT were a Yeovil based brewery, who amongst other things developed the trade name "Autumn Gold" a cider brand which they must have sold to Taunton Cider as it became a quite well known brand.
I believe BMT were taken over by Charringtons, who then became Bass Charringtons and are now just Bass.
The brewery, most if not all now gone, I think was in Clarence Street in Yeovil. Not sure if Chard would have this detail or whether Yeovil Museum might be able to help.
I think Chard museum is only open on a few days, run by volunteers and closed for part of the year.

HI Golfy: I joined RootsChat.Com on the basis of finding (after a search on the internet for Brutton Mitchell Toms Brewery) your query regarding information about Francis Harris Mitchell of Chard. FHM was my paternal grandfather, and, like yourself, I am researching my family background. I do know a little bit about the history of the brewery through my father's stories; however, I am now searching for documentation of same. So far, I have learned that FHM was born to Francis Mitchell (b. 31.12.1815) and Susan Wood Harris (b. 7.3.1827). In total they had nine children (4 girls and 5 boys).
In my branch of the family, the story of the beginning of the wine trade in the family was due to one Susan Mitchell, who sold smuggled French brandy off the Cornish coast in the mid 1700's. I am unable to do any "hands on" research as I live in Canada; consequently I rely completely on the internet for my information gathering. I look forward to any information that you are willing to share.
