Like most other people, I use ADOBE READER [v8] to read PDF files.  Is there a way/means/tool for making notes when reading a document?  I don't mean writing into the document itself or amending the PDF pages, but just making notes like (1) where I got to last time I was here, or (2) general notes on the content etc.

Thanks in advance

Within the basic (free) version of Adobe Acrobat Reader this is not possible but an alternative viewer which has tools to meet your requirements is PDF X-Change Viewer

http://pdf-xchange-viewer.en.softonic.com/

It will allow you to comment and annotate on pdf documents

Quote
    * Add comments and annotations to any PDF file
    * Markup pages with text and objects
    * Type directly on any PDF page
    * Export PDF pages or entire files to BMP, JPEG, TIFF, PNG and more
    * Extract text from a PDF page or file
    * Make your navigation of large PDF files both simple and enjoyable with the Loupe and Pan tools

Thanks for that.  It sounds just the sort of thing that I would find useful.

Just make sure you select the free download option ...

PDF X_change is pretty good and while it doesn't knock Adobe's own product out of the ring it does a pretty good job of it as it is much less obtrusive on your system.
There are other PDF viewers e.g Foxit which is much leaner but it's not always as fast as PDF Xchange especialy when it come to searching the documents.
