Harry Fletcher

Hi All,
I am trying to find details about Harry Fletcher born abt 1881 in Whitby his mother and fathers names were Thomas Robinson Fletcher and Rebecca Hall S Fletcher (nee Clarkson). The problem I have is that there were two Harry Fletcher's born in Whitby in 1881, one in March time and one in September time and I cannot find which one is the correct Harry. Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated especially if you can expand on any of the information.

If it is important to you to have an exact date of birth, then you are going to have to send for a certificate to sort out which of these births is yours.

Otherwise, if you already know his parentage and have followed him through the censuses, you may have to settle for just knowing his birth was 1881!

Havong said that, I am just thinking that the 1881 census was after March (or was it?) so the Jan-March born one might be on it and thus be able to see if that was yours or not!

shows Thomas and Rebecca with baby Harry

Therefore the one with parents Thomas and Rebecca is theone born earlier in the year, before the census.

Too much of a coincidnece if other one has same parents names.

(1891 RG 12 3995 32 5 with 10 yr old Harry)

Hi

That's a good suggestion Liz the 1881 was taken on the night of 3rd April so the first Harry should be on there.

If a certificate is required then you could always ring the registrar's office that deals with Whitby and ask them to check the parents name for you before you order the certificate. I e mailed an office for one of my relatives and they were very helpful and sent me the correct number to order the correct certificate.

Hi Liz & Evie,
Well it looks like I have found two experts here, very quick and correct. I just did a qiuck check and my Harry was born in March 1881 and the census dated him as 3 weeks old, I think could not read it very well. Ok to expand this a little further if I may, could you help me find who my Harry married in Whitby? Although my side of the Fletcher family seems to have originated from Whitby, I can go back as far as 1805, I am now living in Scotland so I am finding it a bit hard researching this far back. Thanks for all your help so far

Presuming Harry married in Whitby there is a marriage 1904 9d 949 to either

Hannah Stephenson or Kate Wood

Do you know of any children from this marriage hopefully after 1911. Also have you managed to track down Harry on the 1911 census?

This will take me a little time to search for. I do not have any of his family names after he was married to whoever the lady was. I have a funny feeling he might have moved away from Whitby shortly after his marrage.

Just a quick look on free BMD shows a Fletcher birth with MMS Stephenson in Whitby born Sept Q 1911

so a look on the index for the 1911 census with a Hannah in the same household as Fletchers in Whitby shows a Henry Fletcher aged 31

This doesn't mean he's not the other mystery Harry though  Sad

Looking on the 1911 census on a search there are only 3 hits for h* fletcher born +/- 3 years 1881 in Whitby 

The Hannah and Henry still in whitby as posted before and a Harry Fletcher approx birth year 1884 in Rotherham (the age discrepancy means nothing in census terms everyone seems to lie about their age on them!  Roll Eyes )  so if you think he moved away then this could be your man  Grin

Hi All,
I have done a bit of research here and found that my Harry born March 1881 did marry a Hannah Stephenson in December 1904 she was also born in Whitby 1881. I will now look into where they moved to and try to find out family details.

Looks like they were in Whitby until at least 1917 as there is a Fletcher birth MMN Stephenson.
