Hi Laurina
Any possible clues from daughters' names that might connect to his own mother's name?

It's a hard one I can't see a John Snr. death with any reference to a middle name Brown. Any deaths with this middle name are all to post 1900s by a long way. Too many John Mortons for you to go through on SP for death also.
Regarding births for John under Morton, I can only see one in 1875 in Greenock which I would imagine you may have already looked at.

If he was meant to have been born circa 1879 , I thought he may have been on the 1881 census in Greenock, but looked at a wider search. The following entry appeared. ( I know the age is a bit out but on how many certs/census do you have his approximate age?)
It's maybe worth a rummage.
8 Old Dalmarnock Rd Barony, Lanark, Scotland Robert MORTON M 55 M Rutherglen, Lanark, Scotland Head Engine Keeper Chemical Works Ann MORTON M 46 F Lochgilphead, Argyll, Eating House Keeper
John BROWN (MORTON) 10 M Rutherglen, Lanark, Stepson Scholar Isabella BROWN (MORTON) 6 F Rutherglen, Lanark, Step Daur Scholar Mary MORTON 1 F Glasgow, Lanark, Daur Isabella CAMPBELL U 17 F Rothesay, Argyll, Servant General Serv (Domestic)

Hi All
That's good lateral thinking tootsiepie! That John Brown/Morton had father called John! Father a coal miner.
Laurina, I've just been going through the 1891/1901 censuses looking for any Mortons b. Scotland in Lancashire area. Found this:
John Morton, 66, visitor, warehouseman b. Scotland, staying at a hotel in Mosely St in Manchester
RG13; Piece: 3748; Folio: 50; Page: 1
Monica
Added: that entry was in 1901

Wasn't sure if father showed as deceased in 1899 or by the time of the second marriage. No parental consent required for your John by the time of his marriage.

Don't know if this is of any help or not but could this be James Brown Morton senior. IGI born 19/11 1854 Gorbals, parents Thomas Morton and Janet Brown. Two siblings, twins Taylor Morton and Jessie Taylor Morton born Gorbals 1853. Liz

Hi Laurina
Something I meant to ask! Did John give his birth place as 'Greenock Morton' on the 1911 census as you showed on your first post?
I just wondered whether we were missing anything with the reference to the Morton bit (other than it being his surname!). The problem when googling it is that Greenock Morton is the Greenock football team so not getting anywhere with that as yet
