I dont know why he would have put Greenock Morton I had a look to see if maybe Greenock Morton may have been named after a family but apparently the people who formed the club named it after the street they lived in (Morton Terrace) Elaine

Maybe your John was an ardent Greenock Morton fan! Strange the reference to Morton (or at least until we figure it out). The only other reference to Morton is as a parish in Dumfrieshire which is why I was double checking.
Elaine, searching for addresses in Greenock starting with Mort* brings up only the reference you have found to the football team origins, namely Morton Terrace as an address.

Last chance saloon for clues You said that from his marriage to Mary Jane he only had boys (5 with one deceased). What were the names of the living boys in order showing in 1911? From his second marriage to ?, were there more children born?
Scots are so good normally with some form of naming pattern that it may be worth looking at.

if you are going to follow it up on the census the address on the birth is Nelson Street Greenock and there are other children born to this couple on the site but sadly it doesn't give their names I will keep an eye out for anything else good luck Elaine
