1851 Census - Jagger, Henry
« on: Monday 15 June 09 21:35 UTC (UK) »

Hi guys

Thanks to previous help I have Henry in 1841 and 1861 and I believe he was still living in 1877 as he was at his daughter Hannah's wedding!  His occupation is noted as overlooker.

But, where was he and 1851 and 1871?

I think his wife was called Hannah and in 1861 Census he had children called Immanuel (12), Hannah (7) and and Martha was 1.  I haven't seen the original page so Hannah's age may be wrong.  In 1861 they were in Pule Hill in Northowram.

Anyone out there who could see if they can find him please?

TIA

Hi Carole

Many thanks for your help.

Hannah was born in 1859, her age on the Marriage certificate is given as 19 in December 1877.  This is the daughter.

Hannah and Henry, I have no idea when or where either of them were born as I am trying to establish that Henry was her father.  The only info I have so far is his name on the Marriage cert.

Although it would appear Henry and Hannah married after Immanuel/Emanuel was born Henry could have been the father.  Maybe the Baptism record would enlighten me if I could establish which Church it would have been.

I dispute Hannah being a widow in 1871 as Henry was a witness at his daughter's wedding in 1877 and signed the register.   Unless of course the Henry in question was Hannah's brother?

TIA

he would have signed as Henry Turner in that case - not Henry Jagger

This is the full 1861 census - as you can see - Hannah was aged 7 so b 1853/54 not 1859.  An 1877 marriage would make her 23/24

All shown as b Northowram

Henry Jagger 39  Dyer
Hannah   31
Immanuel   12
Hannah 7
Martha 1
RG9 Piece 3301 Folio 7 Page 7

I have checked the 1861 and 1871 for Hannah Jagger father henry and there are no entries matching a birth year of 1858-1860

1881/1891 Hannah's age is consistent with an 1859 birthyear and she is shown as b Halifax

- I'm sorry I should have made myself more clear;

he would have signed as Henry Turner in that case - not Henry Jagger - I meant brother to Hannah the daughter, ie the bride, the one born in 1859 (given she was 19 on the Marriage cert in 1877.)

This is the full 1861 census - as you can see - Hannah was aged 7 so b 1853/54 not 1859.  An 1877 marriage would make her 23/24

All shown as b Northowram

Henry Jagger 39  Dyer
Hannah   31
Immanuel   12
Hannah 7
Martha 1

It wouldn't be unknown for a bride or groom to lie about their age?  But, y 1881 she was married to James Albert Siddall (she's the lady in the photo.)  I have a copy of her Death cert and she's noted as being 85 years of age when she died on 30 November 1944.

I have checked the 1861 and 1871 for Hannah Jagger father henry and there are no entries matching a birth year of 1858-1860

When you say you've checked 1861 and 1871 I assume you mean the Census?  Now you understand my frustration at NOT being able to find him!

1881/1891 Hannah's age is consistent with an 1859 birthyear and she is shown as b Halifax

Maybe she just made up Henry Jagger to save face when she married.  BUT it doesn't explain who the Henry Jagger was who was a witness at her wedding.  Perhaps it was a cousin rather than father or brother? To be a witness at a wedding does one have to be 21 and over?  The next time I get up to Wakefield I will have a look at the original register!

Could you see if you can find an 31 year old Henry Jagger in Halifax in 1871 please?

Thank you so much for your help!
