Forbidden Poem
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 13:03 UTC (UK) »

When I was a child, my grandfather would recite a poem he had found, proberbly in the late 1880s to early 1890s.  He told us the poem had been sold for a penny a sheet and then later that day or the following day, all the copies were taken back as it was banned. He had learned it word for word and it had stayed in his memory for life.   I wish I had listened more carefully to the words instead of being entranced by his rich irish tones.  I seem to remember it was about a man falling asleep under a tree and have a feeling it was a rebel verse.  If anyone else has knowledge of it I would love to read the words again.  Grandad was born 1882 and left to become a sailor in the mid 1890s.  Anne
