Fantastic news!

Have been sent an obituary that gives John's date of birth. I can now confirm that he is the John Grant who came out on the Helenslee with his family.

Many thanks for putting me on the right path with the ship information and the family links in NZ and cemetery information.

I can now move forward

Hmmm  ... but wasn't the John GRANT - miner - 1876 - travelling on the "Otago",  a case of mistaken identity.   Huh

Yes, but I was looking at miners licences in 1860's possibly before he became a compositer/publisher later in 1870's.
There are also James Grants on there.
The other one didnt arrive till 1876 as you say.
