Hi enzfan
Just adding the reference to your earlier thread from the Perthshire board ... (which may be of help to any descendants).
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,386998.0.html
And perhaps you could post here, the details of the children who accompanied James and Rebecca on the "Helenslee" voyage in 1863 ?

Mmm .... I see that there is only one passenger list for the "Helenslee - 1863" ... and it doesn't give the ages of the passengers.
However, ages of the GRANT family can be deduced from the 1861 census information given on the Perthshire board thread.
Enzfan ... is your line, that of the son John GRANT born 1850 ?
* Do you already have information for his descendants ?

Hi
These people travelled on the HELENSLEE 1863
James Grant - 46 Rebecca Grant - 32 John - 12 (I believe could be my line) James - 11 Rebecca - 9 William - 7 Jean Ann - 5 Charlotte - 2 Isabella - b. 1862
There also seems to be two other daughters - one named May b. 1863, who could have been born on board ship. Certainly I can find no NZ birth record for her. Also one named Lucy.
Am currently checking out info from NZ Historical BDM site. Otherwise nothing else known about them in NZ except what we know about John from about 1876 onwards

Aw ... Trish.
I think I was spurred on by your splendid effort on the other thread.
But I'm beginning to wonder if I might have wasted my time.

Yes there is some doubt and I'm not sure how to confirm 100%
My ancestor is a John Grant who was the eldest child of James and Rebecca Grant (nee Moodie, Moody, Mudie etc). Our family oral history tells us that he was born in Stanley, Pershire about 1850. We have a death certificate which confirmed his parents and gave an age of death which matched the 1850 birth probability.
Census information and information gathered from the Family Search site of the Mormon church seemed to confirm all of this and also give further siblings which is what I was looking for with the intention of finding living relatives in Scotland.
While searching I also found on Ancestry a 10 year old query relating to the same family which unfortunately had had no replies. This posting suggested that the family had all come to NZ. So thanks to this forum the ship's list has been found and that can now be confirmed.
Our family, however, believed that John came to NZ on his own, apparently via New Foundland, California and Scotland. We also understood that he arrived in NZ on the OTAGO in 1876 and there is a matching record to support this. There is also an earlier record of a John Grant departing NZ for Melbourne from Greymouth. Is this the same person I wonder?
I spoke to one of my father's cousins (John Grant's grandson) recently and asked whether he knew anything about the whole family coming to NZ and he had no knowledge of this.
Hopefully this explains the comment I made adequately. I had hoped that if I found a living relative that there may be some information that may clear this mystery up. Currently I'm using the Historical BMD site to work out weddings and children etc
Thanks

Thank you for expanding on just what it is, that you are searching for. The term "seeking any information, and /or descendants" is not terribly helpful, because often times it results in us sourcing information which the lister either has ... or is not especially interested in having ! (When an effort has been made to supply information, as it was on this thread, and that effort is not acknowledged, then we begin to question whether it is worthwhile continuing to search on your behalf !).
Having an oral history is of course wonderful, but it needs to be remembered that often, stories become "distorted' as they are passed down through the generations. Facts from BDM certificates and other official sources, are what is needed if you are to find your true roots - mere guesswork tends to lead you down the wrong pathways. AND ... when you come across (online or otherwise), information that relates to "your family tree", never treat this as being "absolutely kosher" - it is wise to always further investigate - re-check any given sources, yourself.
So the challenge you have here, is to find whether the family stories, stack up against "certified information" ?
* On the death record for John GRANT, what information is given for "Years in NZ" ??
