Thanks

New to this so I apologise if I haven't been specific enough.

Information provided via this forum has been new and hugely useful

I guess what I really need to find is a living relative of this family which I hope I can do using marriage and birth records. Can't think how else to progress

Hi enzfan

That's okay  ... we understand.   Smiley

I guess what I really need to find is a living relative of this family  .....   Can't think how else to progress

Well, no.    If you think about it , a living relative (unless they have thoroughly researched the family tree), will only be able to pass on to you, the stories (if indeed they have any), that have come from the previous generations.    And these, may well be grossly distorted / hopelessly inaccurate.
If that's all you are wanting, then, so be it.    (RootsChat has a policy about searches for the "living" ... please refer to the homepage).

If on the other hand, you are serious about compiling a family history, then again on the RootsChat homepage, you'll find some helpful tips, about family history research in general  ... how it all works  ... and why we work backwards, from known facts.

We can offer you help and guidance here, but please appreciate that we cannot perform miracles  ... and that your patience and co-operation is also needed.     Smiley

42 years

But how can you be certain that that is even true? The cemetery information I have with regards to his death states that particulars were furnished by his son. The death certificate does not give a birth date, only his age at birth and place of birth

I have ordered the printout relating to his marriage so hopefully that may be more informative

Sorry if I'm asking the obvious but what year did he die?

If he arrived 1863+42= 1905
                     1876+42=1918

Re John Grant's birthdate

Nothing on the marriage certificate - only age at time of marriage which means that John's birthday must be anywhere from May 2nd 1850 to April 30th 1851

Any suggestions on where to look now would be greatly appreciated

To confirm a birth date.

For example what other documents would someone who arrived in NZ in the 1800s and lived to the 1900s expect to have that might include a birth date that is recorded somewhere?

Very difficult to find an exact birthdate on any (NZ) documentation for that era.

*   If he was the 12 year-old arriving here in 1863, there is a slim possibility a school record may exist (but at that age ... and perhaps nearing 13 years, he may have gone straight into the workforce ?)

*   You would need to know a good deal about his life and any transactions he might have made, to even begin a search for documents ... and even if you did find something, it may not have been the type of document that required him to divulge his birthdate.

What was the occupation of John GRANT  ??

"Miner" when he apparently came to NZ

When he married in 1878 he was recorded as a "compositor". He printed the "Bruce Herald" which came from Milton and is no longer being printed. The paper can be viewed online through the Paperspast website

In the late 1800s he became the owner of the "Woodville Examiner". This paper is no longer being printed. He died in Woodville in 1916

Have you already seen this ?

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/

Bruce Herald - 30 April 1878 - "Presentation"

Presentation ...  on the occasion of his forthcoming marriage, to John GRANT, foreman of the Bruce Herald Printing Office.

The article states that he had worked for the newspaper for 7 years !

Yes I have. If I remember correctly he actually starts to show up as the printer and publisher sometime in 1876

The 7 year thing is another little anomoly that makes the family story seem more and more unlikely

Perhaps I should contact the Milton Museum to see if they have anything that would be useful
