I have OpenOffice and am trying to prepare a list of phone numbers with the important ones in red.  Not being very technical I find the Help section confusing and would be grateful if someone could assist.  A step by step guide in simple language would be helpful.

I do have open office on my computer but i don't use  it, I use documents.Doesn't open office have a colour highlighter or similar on the top bar,whereby you can hi-light the number you want to change the colour of,then click on hi-light and choose colour red.Then just click by the number and you will see it is red.I use my hi-light a lot makes it quicker to find things in a list Grin

Thank you both for your suggestions but I'm afraid I have not succeeded. Using the background icon I can change the backround to red but no luck in trying to change the text to red.  I'll just use a highlight pen for the important numbers.

right click behind the text you want to change and drag the curser over it.
the text should now be housed in a block.
Go to the Large A on the far right of the tool bar click it and chose a colour out of the box.

I have just done what you are trying to do i used the icon on the left,click red then run the pencil over the line you want to highlight then click it off,it does work.I did all the lines in different colours.when you want to red another line just click on the icon again.
