Mary Ann Jeffs / Ann Avery link *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 05:48 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to trace the link bewteen Mary An Jeffs (this is her maiden name), born 2/7/1843 in Bubbenhall, who in the 1851 census was living with her grandmother Ann Avery age 57 born Yardley, Worcestershire.

Mary Ann Jeffs parents were Francis Jeffs and Sarah Jeffs (nee Tidmas), both born in Warwickshire.  I'm assuming her parents died some time between her birth and 1851 as I can't find them on the census.

Unless I'm missing something, wouldn't this make Mary Ann's grandmother either a Tidmas or a Jeffs, in which case I can't see the link to Ann Avery.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hi,

In 1851 Ann AVERY has two daughters Mary 18 and Elizabeth 11 both born Kenilworth. In 1841 there is,

1841 HO107/1135/7  f.4  p.7  Kenilworth
Burton Green

William AVERY   60    Labourer
Ann                45
Ester              20
Thomas          15
John              12
Mary               9
Elizabeth          2
Charles            2 Mo          All born in County

On the IGI there are christenings for Thomas, John, Mary and Elizabeth in Kenilworth to William and Ann AVERY. Charles age 2m is on there as son of Ester.

There are other earlier christenings, including Ester, to a William and Elizabeth AVERY in Kenilworth. One of these is Elizabeth Avery Chr.1819.

I found these deaths,

Elizabeth AVERY
Date of burial: 21 Sep 1819
Age at death: 6 Weeks
Place of burial: Kenilworth, Warwickshire
Dedication: St Nicholas

Elizabeth AVERY
Date of burial: 10 Aug 1819
Age at death: 36
Place of burial: Kenilworth, Warwickshire
Dedication: St Nicholas

I wonder if Elizabeth was the first wife of Willam who might have died in childbirth and Ann his second wife,

I found this marrriage,

William AVERY
Ann TITMOUSE
Marriage:  05 NOV 1822   Berkswell, Warwick

I found this christening,

Sarah TIDMAS
Christening:  27 JUN 1820   Stoneleigh, Warwick
Ann TIDMAS

Bubbenhall, Yardley, Burton Green, Berkswell and Stoneleigh are all within about 20 miles of each other,

Could Ann TIDMAS and Ann TITMOUSE be the same person?

Regards
Daisy

Thanks so much Daisy.  That all sounds very feasable.  I've ordered the certificate for the marriage of Sarah Tidmas and Francis Jeffs so it will be interesting to see who her father is and get confirmation of her age.

Just out of interest, to help me with further tree research, did you get all the other christening, death and marriage info from IGI too or local records.  I'm quite new to Geneology and struggling a bit now I'm in the years before civil registration!

Hi,

I found the marriage and christenings on the IGI and the burials in 'Parish Records Collection 1538-2005' at findmypast.

You may already use it, but just in case Smiley  here is a link to Genuki, a site full of useful info about where to find different records etc,

Hi lilacandy,

Daisy has done a great job for you Smiley

Baptism;

Ann TITMUS
17 May 1795
Yardley, Worcestershire
Parents; John Titmus and Mary

Yardley was where Ann was born on 1851 Census

The surname changes frequently Roll Eyes and this is common with all branches of this family. If you search Titmus/Titmash/Titmouse or any other versions of this name you will find DOBFARM on Rootschat who has an interest in this name. Wink

The 1841 census has Sarah Avory age 21 servant in Stoneleigh village. Francis is living with his parents John and Hannah in the same village.

Baptism,

Francis JEFFS
02 June 1822, Weston under Wetherly, Warwick
Parents, John and Hanna

Siblings;
Thomas, 18 June 1815
Sarah, 28 April 1816

The only marriage John Jeffs to a Hannah I can find is 1806. Possible as there may be other children born earlier than the ones on this batch of which 2 appear on 1841 Census. Also John and Hannah are aged 52/56 so this seems likely.

Hannah WESTTON/John JEFFS
16 February 1806, Ashow, Warwick

Just to update you ......

I received Franics Jeffs / Sarah Tidmas marriage cert in post this morning.

It has Francis Jeffs age 19, living in Stoneligh, father John Jeffs.  Sarah Tidmas age 21, living in Stoneleigh.  Unfortunately has no details of her father.  So it all fits.

I guess it will be vitually impossible to find Sarah Tidmas's father as it would seem that she was born out of wedlock.

Hi,

It might be worth contacting the Warwickshire record office to see if a Bastardy Order was made,

Fantastic Smiley

Although it may be impossible to find the Father of Sarah some genealogists think that following the female line is the only pure one Grin

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth.
