IGI shows Robert Hinor marrying Hannah TABOR at Cherry Hinton.

1851 census has the family of John and Lydia TABOR at Cherry Hinton, who have a ten year old Elizabeth Smith, niece with them.  Robert and Hannah Hinor are the previous household on the census page. The following household is also a TABOR family, who have a 17 year old Rachel ANDREWS, born at Abington visiting.

could well be her family - altho like others in the thread I wonder if John Smith married his servant, Lucy Andrews - her age etc in 1851 matches.

So is she really Anderson ?   Huh

Umm, Galium,

This is now getting very interesting.  I had not known of Hinor until I started this thread - just hours ago, but a niece "Elizabeth Smith" - perhaps born as Elizabeth ANDREWS to Lucy in 1840- now that makes sense to me at least.

Umm, my John (Ellington) Smith's (1840 ish to July 1928) NSW born children include the following names:  Laura, Nellie, Mary Jane, Thomas Hartley, Rebecca, Reuben, Annie, Rachel.  (two others, did not survive even their infancy).   John Smith did not use any middle name in NSW until about 1886, when it seems there were two couples, both named John and Mary Smith, registering their children at same registry office, and christening at same church. "  If by chance there is a naming pattern, then umm, .... is REUBEN Smith a possible clue at all?

Many thanks so far, and three red messages since I started to reply.  I will post anyways, and try to answer

LKL and David and Galium , Ta, so they are five miles apart - so Lucy Andrews/Anderson could have moved to Cherry Hinton as perhaps a servant to say help with that widower's possible children and ended up married after birth of their daughter Elizabeth Andrews who after her mother's marriage became Elizabeth Smith and then went to live with her mum's sister - Mrs Lydia Tabor !

Umm, Will try to find Lydia Tabor's birth place !  could it be Triplow  Shocked   Roll Eyes or could it be Cherry Hinton  Shocked  Roll Eyes

Umm,

Could be ANDREWS and ANDERSON were perhaps just enumerator's typos perhaps - could there be "accents" variations perhaps ?

1841 looks more like Andrewson to me. Not that it makes much difference as I'm confident that the Andrews/Andersons in this thread are the same . In fact is there more than just the marriage entry that names Lucy as Anderson? Everyone else seems to be Andrews

Hi All,

Ah, David, I want Lucy Andrews and Lucy Anderson to be one and the same.  Her marriage entry says her father's name was Joseph Anderson, but I think that's the only other time I have found "Anderson".  Of course that doesn't mean I have found "My" John Smith, but this widower seems to be a likely candidate !

I have found Mrs Lydia Tabor (nee Andrews) on 1851 Census, Ta Galium for that clue - in 1851 her place of birth was "Essex".  Will check later census' for verification !

Ah,

ANDREWSON umm, Yep, I think you are right David.

Umm, on Mrs Lydia Tabor's birth place, by 1881 it was noted as Abington, and there are various TABOR families all living on High St Cherry Hinton.  But, back to Lydia's sister, Mrs Lucy Smith, wife of John Smith.

Well, thanks everyone for all this help so far.   I guess what I need to do (its after 11 pm here in NSW) is figure out how to determine if Lucy raised any step children, possibly a lad named John Smith, whose birth mother may (or may not) have been "Ann Ellington".

But I hope that all the efforts this evening from everyone have either advanced my own tree, or perhaps will help others advance their own trees -

Andrewson would be the logical surname for Lucy, thanks, what a shame that "Ellington" was not an alternative.

I will try to find time tomorrow evening NSW time (ie in around 20 hours from when I post this) to get back to you all, but I would be ever so pleased if you post away with any clues or thoughts anyways.

Just RBT and noticed

Rachel

1841 census

Joseph and Sarah ANDREWS are in Little Abington. Their children include 8 year old Rachel.

Have never found Rachel in my searchings before now.  Rachel was name of one my John (Ellington) Smith's daughters, and umm, that's exact spelling for her!  Rachel Smith was my late Grandmother!  Could be wishful thinking on my part, but ummm ........ tis getting closer to breaking a brick in my John and Mary Smith's brickwall!

Night all,

There's a David Smith in Cherry Hinton. When he married in 1839 his father was John. In censuses he was born c1818 at Cherry Hinton. There are no other Smiths born Cambs keyword cherry that crop up in censuses, so David may have been John's only son, at least that survived to censuses.

There are two possibilities for burials of a wife of John in Cherry Hinton, neither of which looks particularly promising:
Sarah age 25 on 12 Oct 1826. "Of Cherry Hinton but of Long Stanton parish". Seems a bit young. But look at Lucy's age!
Anna age 54 on 29 Sept 1832 No other detail. As John was said to be 55 in 1841 that would give him a birth 1781-6, fairly close to Anna's imputed birth.

There's no marriage of a John Smith in Cherry Hinton, nor a baptism of John Smith (not surprising as he gave his birthplace as not Cambridgeshire in 1841) nor a baptism of David.

Lucy Smith widow age 36 remarried to James Jackson in Cherry Hinton on 2 Sept 1855 where her father is named as Joseph ANDREWS. The witnesses were Henry and Harriett Tabor.  That should settle the Andrews/Andrewson/Anderson business. As James was only 33 Lucy may have been economical with the truth so far as her age was concerned. In 1861 she was living in Cherry Hinton age 44; her three sons John Smith 19, William Smith 17 and Peter Smith 15 were living with her and James Jackson.

With no children living with him in 1841; given the age of his probable son David; the lack of any other Smiths in Cherry Hinton in censuses or baptisms, I doubt if John had any other male children

So far as names go I think you might well be clutching at straws! Naming a daughter after his possible stepmother's sister? No, I don't buy it.

David

Just in case it's not been given so far:
Baptism at Cherry Hinton
23 June 1840 Elizabeth ANDREWS baseborn daughter of Lucy Andrews, servant

And a bit more: Lucy's son John Smith b 1842 can be found in Horningsea from 1871-91 so he's not John Ellington Smith

I think this one's a dead horse!

Hi Everyone,

I agree with David that Lucy Andrews (sometimes recorded as Andrewson/Anderson) does NOT seem to be connected to my own family tree, but I will go back through this thread and summarise our collective findings so that future RChatters seeking "Lucy Anderson" will have some well researched clues.

Once I have done the summary for Lucy A,  I will complete this thread.

Thank you everyone.

As an aside, I will concentrate on the farmer, John and Lucy Smith at Tydd St Giles in 1841 and 51, and their son, John, who by 1861 seems to be in nearby county at Tydd St Marys with his younger bro.
