hi, time to attack one of my brick walls.
my GG grandfather Robert EADIE is shown as born in Co Down, in abt 1825 (taking census, marriage and death certs into account
his parents (from marriage cert)
Robert EADIE ; a farmer
Mary EADIE (ne HANNAH)
Mary was deceased by the time of her sons marriage in 1855
Marriage was in 1855 to Catherine MCFARLANE b. abt1830 d. 28 Oct 1876
in Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire,
Robert died 5 Nov 1878 at his residence, 175 Craighall Rd, Glasgow , he was a cattle feeder at Keppoch farm.
the census only gives him from "Ireland",though his marriage cert gives birth as, Co Down, (date unknown) and that is ALL I have to go on.
From a religious point of view the family would be protestant (if that helps in the search)
If anyone could assist in finding his birth, and possible date of travel to Glasgow, I'd be hugely appreciative.

Can't fill in any details here but I can give you some general information.
Firstly, Ireland was part of the U.K. so no records were kept of people travelling between Ireland and Scotland/England/Wales.
Next, 'Protestant' doesn't help a lot when searching for church records- could be Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregationalist, Reformed Presbyterian, etc.

Your best bet is to try to find Robert Eadie senior in Griffith valuation.

If you can identify him (try plenty of alternative spellings for the surname) then at least you have a parish and townland to work from. I found only one Robert EADY (no Eadies) in Co Down - he was the tenant of Alexander Robb at Ballyskeagh Low in Newtownards parish.
Civil registration of protestant marriages only began in 1845 so Robert Snr and Mary's marriage will only be found in church records (which are not indexed!). Ros Davies excellent website will tell you what church records are available for the parish in question and the townland address will help identify the right family in the records. Beware there are a LOT of protestant churches in Newtownards, so it could be a long day trailling through the microfilms at PRONI  .

These are a couple of sites that may help you.
1911 census

It may help you pinpoint a location to search by using the surname. I was able to locate a church used by my relations as it was stated under religion. e.g. Ryan's Presbyterian
It definitely appears the name was prevalent in the Newtownards area on the Roz Davies site, the archives site and also the family search pilot site.
