Karie you are a gem!!!!!
My granny is now 94 years old and sadly starting to lose her faculties a little. She doesnt remember anything except that Nellie married a man called Jack or John Farmer and apparently they had one son. I really dont know if they came back to Ireland or not.
thanks again Liscoole

Hi Karie
Firstly let me thank you for your continued help with this, it's been driving me mad for almost a year now- a real brick wall! So I do appreciate any help at all.
I found the original family in the 1881 England Census, the last census before they moved to Belfast. William is listed, as is Mary Jane and Joseph Thomas's age is given as "under 1 month" so Im assuming he was born in April 1881. It gives his place of birth as " Lancashire St Helens". William's place of birth is given as Liverpool, Mary Jane was born in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey. Strange that Joseph is not listed in the BMD index! Incidentally, Joe went on to serve in the Navy and was lost on the HMS Hampshire. Ive attached a photo of him, in case you are interested!
You could well be right about the whole name thing.. Granny seemed sure her name was Ethel but this has never been proven. She was always referred to as Nellie. It might even have been Ellen! As to the Farmer's occupation, we have no idea! I spoke to my dad and he believes that Nellie went over to Canada to work as a domestic servant, met John/ Jack Farmer out there and married him. We do know that they came back to Belfast on a visit several times as my dad says his father recalled complaining about how noisy Nellie's son was...
Thanks again for your help Karie!

There was a Nellie Evans who sailed on the Lake Champlain which arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick on 20 Apr 1908. Nellie was 23 (although in the database her age was mistranscribed) and a book folder(?). Her last permanent residence was listed as Lancashire and she was going to Vancouver.

Might have just found Nellie's birth- in Prescot Dec 1884 (Joseph Thomas is also registered in Prescot) Ellen Sheffield Evans.... Sheffield was the maiden name of Nellie's maternal grandmother Harriet. It's got to be her.... so her name was not Ethel it was Ellen... amazing how all those years my granny thought her name was Ethel!

Here's a link to the passenger list at Library and Archives Canada: http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e145/e003623677.jpg
The BC Archives marriage index has a marriage for Ellen Sheffield Evans to Hugh Auld on 2 Dec 1908 in Vancouver. There is also a death registration for Ellen Sheffield Auld who died 3 May 1922 in Vancouver. There were a few Hugh Aulds listed in the death index but the most likely seems to be a Hugh Auld who died 22 Aug 1954 in Burnaby. Hopefully someone can do a look-up for you.
I found a 1911 census entry for Hugh and Ellen Auld and they have a daughter named Ethel! Ellen's birth date is listed as Sep 1885 but census have been known to be a year or two out. If Ellen was born in late Sep it seems likely her birth would have been registered in the Dec quarter. Here's a link to the census image at LAC (the family starts on line 46): http://www.rootschat.com/links/06ig/

There's a possible second marriage for Hugh to a Florence May Moore. They married on 10 Nov 1932 in Vancouver.
I couldn't see a marriage for Ethel in the index but it only goes to 1933.

Jacqui and Karie
Just to let you know we had a talk and believe that the lady who my granny remembers is probably Nellie's daughter Ethel, and not Nellie herself! So all I need to find now is a marriage between Ethel Auld and John Farmer...
I also found Ellen Sheffield Evans on the IGI family search site and it confirmed that her parents were William Evans and Mary Jane Emms. So that is definetly our Nellie!!!
Also, I didnt see any volunteers for Canada on the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website, any idea who to ask? I'd like to get details of Nellie's marriage to Hugh Auld.
thanks so much for your help so far ladies, you've been wonderful in tracking her down!

Hi Liscoole Use this link www.raogk.org and then go to requesting guidelines..at the bottom of that page there is box "Lets go find a volunteer", then scroll down to non USA to Canada, then to British Columbia, scroll down to Vancouver...the woman's name is Gwen Szychter. You need to give her all the details that are on the BC archive site to the right of the entry for Ellen Sheffield Auld to get her death cert, same for Hugh. Probably getting Hugh's would be better because it may give a child's name. I found an entry for Hugh Auld departed Londonderry arrived August 17, 1906 on the Empress of Britain. The 1911 census shows his occupation as Watchman. You can also access the British Columbia Cemetary Finding Aid(BCCFA) and locate their graves. However, the only one that shows up is Florence May Auld. Karie
