Hi there, I'm new to this site so please forgive the clumsy way I've found you. I've been tracing the 'Ramus' family tree for a year and a half, and have a stumbling block in Waterford around the 1870's. Alfred (1870), Henry (1872), and Louisa Martha (1875), all children of Joseph Ramus (London 1845), are listed in their later English census's as having been born in Waterford, Ireland. Joseph was a fine art dealer, they relocated to Scotland at some point, and re emerge in the Scottish census of 1891, with a new addition of Bertie, born in Glasgow (1878). I would be so grateful if you could advise me of my options, or indeed chances (if any) of tracing their birth certificates. The family has a Jewish heritage too, if that's any help, I look forward eagerly to any assistance you may be able to offer,
yours, Andy Ramus

Civil registration started here in 1864 so the Children's births should be registered.
familysearch have an online index to the registers available at : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347 although a quick search shows only one partial match with details of the details of the death of an Elizabeth Mary Ramos (age 66), in Dublin South
if you find promising matches you can order research certs from the GRO - www.groireland.ie
another poster on the Dublin board mentioned the Jewish Museum in Dublin, which was able to find very useful records - maybe they hold Waterford records or could refer you to a similar resource in that county..

I had a look at an 1867 directory for Waterford and no Ramus or Ramos are listed.

absolutely spot on Halfpenny you champion !! Thanks so much for that. Slightly surprised they could have children and record it out of wedlock in Ireland as I thought that sort of thing would have been frowned upon, but the dates and names are a perfect match.
Is it possible to get copies of the original records?
Once again thanks a million,
Andy Ramus
